Star Clippers had been on my radar for a while, but I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Was it a traditional cruise or more of an intimate sailing adventure? After seven nights aboard Royal Clipper, I’d say our Adriatic Sea sailing experience blended the best parts of both.
Matt and I recently sailed the Classic Adriatic Escapes itinerary, traveling round-trip from Venice through Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro. We travel to Europe quite frequently, and I have to say that this was a lovely way to see six new European coastal towns!
What surprised me most was how different the experience felt from that of a traditional large-ship cruise. Royal Clipper is beautiful, and the tall ship experience adds plenty of romance to the journey. But for me, the real star was the incredible European itinerary and the small ports we experienced along the way.
And the beauty of sailing with Star Clippers is that you can choose any itinerary in Europe, the Caribbean, and beyond, and experience that same magic as you sail into those ports that the bigger cruise lines can’t!

Our Royal Clipper sailing was hosted by Star Clippers. As always, all opinions, experiences, and photos shared here are our own.
Our Royal Clipper Adriatic Sea Sailing Experience
Our seven-night sailing started and ended in Venice, with stops in Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro. Some ports were places we already knew we wanted to visit, such as Dubrovnik, Croatia, while others completely surprised me. I fell in love with the small fishing village of Komiza, Croatia, on the western side of Vis.
Honestly, that ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip. Star Clippers can access smaller ports that feel very different from the huge cruise terminals many travelers associate with European cruising.
We spent most days off the ship from morning until late afternoon or evening. We walked old towns, swam in the Adriatic Sea, had Radlers on the beach, shopped, and explored at our own pace.

There was no pressure to hurry back for a packed schedule of onboard activities. And since drinks are à la carte (and surprisingly inexpensive), we also never felt tied to a drink package or obligated to spend our day around the ship’s amenities.
Instead, life revolved around the destinations. Royal Clipper became our beautiful home base for starting and ending our day as we journeyed between ports.
The ship still added something special to our every day. Watching the sail away every evening, to the tune of 1492, never got old, and seeing Royal Clipper waiting in the harbor after exploring all day felt incredibly memorable. As we watched smaller boats gravitate toward our ship for photos or overheard a family marveling at our tall ship from the walls of Dubrovnik, we were proud to be a part of that!
As Game of Thrones fans, I still can’t believe we sailed right into Dubrovnik (King’s Landing) aboard a 5-masted tall ship like this. It felt surreal!

What is Star Clippers?
Star Clippers is a small-ship cruise line built around the romance of traditional tall-ship sailing. The experience feels much more intimate than a typical large cruise.
The company operates three sailing ships: Royal Clipper, Star Clipper, and Star Flyer. Each combines classic sailing traditions with modern comforts and destination-focused itineraries, sailing around Europe, the Caribbean, Central America, and even canal and ocean crossings!
Sailing on Royal Clipper
We sailed aboard the Royal Clipper, the largest ship in the fleet. She has five masts, 42 sails, and space for up to 227 guests.
And while Royal Clipper is the largest full-rigged sailing ship in the world, our sailing had 197 passengers, and the ship never felt crowded. There was also something refreshing about how casual everything felt. Despite the dramatic ship and excellent service, the vibe never felt stuffy or overly formal.
For us, the experience felt grand and dramatic without ever feeling like a massive cruise ship. The atmosphere was relaxed, social, and surprisingly international.
On our sailing, we had passengers from 19 countries and crew members from 13. That vibrant mix of cultures became one of my favorite parts of the experience. I will note that English was widely used as the primary language onboard, so don’t worry about any language barriers.

How Royal Clipper is Different From a Traditional Cruise Ship
Unlike the larger cruise ships, Royal Clipper is not a floating resort filled with endless attractions. For Matt and me, that is actually part of its appeal!
There was morning yoga, occasional classes and organized activities, live music, and some evening entertainment at the open-air Tropical Bar located on the main deck. The marina platform also opened at certain times for swimming and watersports directly off of the ship. Royal Clipper also has three pools and plenty of outdoor deck space.
But you do not build your day around the ship’s activity schedule.
Instead, the rhythm of the trip follows the ports. We spent our days exploring and returned to Royal Clipper for sail-away, dinner, drinks, and relaxed evenings onboard.
For us, that balance felt just right!

Why I Loved Sailing Europe With Star Clippers
What stood out most to me was how naturally this style of sailing fit with European travel. We could reach smaller coastal towns, spend full days exploring, and still enjoy the ease of unpacking just once.
Small Ships Can Reach More Interesting Ports
One of the biggest advantages of sailing with Star Clippers is access to smaller ports and harbors. That became apparent almost immediately on our Adriatic Sea sailing itinerary.
We sailed through narrow waterways into Šibenik and through the spectacular Bay of Kotor. In Komiža, Dubrovnik, and Rovinj, we tendered directly into the heart of these beautiful coastal towns.
At most stops, Royal Clipper was one of the largest ships around. That was a dramatic contrast to ports crowded with multiple mega-ships.
We often shared the harbor with sailboats, catamarans, and smaller luxury yachts. It made the entire experience feel much more intimate. And arriving on Royal Clipper was part of the fun. People regularly stopped to photograph the ship as we sailed into port or waited offshore.

Why This Style of Sailing Works So Well in Europe
While it sounds like a good idea at first, I have always been hesitant to recommend a large European cruise as someone’s first trip to Europe. Huge ships often visit busy cruise ports, and some terminals sit far from the historic areas travelers want to experience. Your days are rushed as you try to explore large European towns.
Star Clippers changed my perspective on cruising Europe!
We could wake up somewhere new and still spend nearly the entire day exploring beautiful small to mid-sized European coastal towns. The smaller ports felt much more connected to the places we had traveled so far to see.

For destination-focused travelers, I think that is a huge advantage. You get the convenience of cruising without sacrificing the feeling of actually being in Europe.
I would 100% recommend a Star Clippers sailing to someone visiting Europe for the first time. Between the amazing itineraries, great value, and top-notch service, it is a great way to see several unique European destinations at a laid-back pace!
Personally, I am very interested in their Greece itineraries and the Spain, Italy, and French Riviera itineraries. Many of these include stops in places like Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, and beyond, which are harder to reach or require additional logistics on our big European trips.
Honestly, when looking through them to write this post, every single Star Clippers itinerary catches my eye!

What It’s Like Sailing on Royal Clipper
Life onboard Royal Clipper is comfortable, casual, and fairly simple. You have everything you need, but the experience never feels overproduced. For us, the best onboard moments were often the simplest ones. We loved sail-away, swimming right off of the ship, and relaxing on the top deck or at the Tropical Bar with a drink after exploring all day.
As I mentioned earlier, we had 197 passengers onboard, which was fairly close to Royal Clipper’s maximum capacity. Still, the ship never felt crowded. There was a nice mix of couples, friends, multi-generational families, and a few solo travelers. I would estimate about 60% of passengers were over 50, although we met several couples our age and younger.
There were also about 15 kids onboard, mostly teenagers traveling during the European summer holidays. I actually think this is something I would love to do with our teenagers!
One benefit of the smaller passenger count was the personal service. Crew members quickly learned our names, and you naturally began to recognize and connect with other passengers throughout the week. We heard many stories about couples and families who met aboard Star Clippers and now sail together year after year!

Our Royal Clipper Cabin
Our Category 2 cabin was on Deck 2 and had a small porthole overlooking the water. It was comfortable and functional, with everything we needed for the week. It was very hot in Europe during our August sailing, and the air conditioner kept up well!
I wouldn’t describe the cabin as oversized or overly luxurious, but that also wasn’t what attracted me to this Star Clippers sailing trip. The bedding was comfortable, and there was ample storage. Our suitcases fit well under the bed. Honestly, we spent very little time in our cabin beyond sleeping, showering, and getting ready.
Whether it was the views or being able to watch a crew actually sail a tall ship, the magic for us was on the top deck!
Note that there is usually only one plug in the stateroom. So, make sure to get a European plug adaptor with multiple ports so you can charge several items at once.

Food and Drinks on Royal Clipper
Food was available throughout much of the day. Mornings began with coffee and pastries at the Piano Bar for those who wanted something quick, or with a larger breakfast buffet, including an omelet station.
Lunch usually featured a themed buffet, either in the main dining room or occasionally at the Tropical Bar. Afternoon snacks and even midnight snacks were also available.
Dinner was a longer, multi-course affair and could easily last a couple of hours. As with most leisurely European dinners, most passengers loved the pace. To be 100% honest, I would have enjoyed a quicker dinner option on some evenings, but those longer dinners are typical in Europe and on cruises in general. That said, if fancy dinners and leisurely dining are my only personal criticism, I think that says a lot about how great these Star Clippers cruises are!

That said, the food was delicious! I often opted for the soup course, a main seafood dish, and dessert. The chocolate ice cream was some of the best I have ever had. During the Captain’s Dinner, they served amazing Spiny Lobster, and Baked Alaska was paraded around the room for dessert.
The crew joined us in the dining room, and everyone sang “We Are the World” in unison as the crew waved flags representing their nationalities. Onboard Star Clippers, they like to say that we are all just sailors!

One of my biggest (and most pleasant) surprises was how inexpensive the drinks were. The house wine selection was great, priced at around €4 per glass and €18 per bottle. Cocktails and mixed drinks were also very reasonable, with many starting at €4.
Matt and I love enjoying wine and cocktails when we travel, so for us, this made it much more enjoyable than other cruises where they nickel-and-dime you with abnormally expensive drinks!
There was no drink package to maximize, and very little pressure to spend on board. That contributed to the relaxed feeling of the entire trip.
Pools, Marina Platform and Swimming From the Ship
Royal Clipper has two smaller round pools, a larger central pool, and a pool bar. But my favorite water experience happened directly off the ship.
At certain stops, the marina platform opened for swimming and watersports right there off the ship! Guests could use paddleboards, kayaks, floats, and even a small sailboat.
Swimming directly from Royal Clipper in the Adriatic was easily one of my favorite onboard experiences. The water temperature of the Adriatic Sea in early August was refreshing and quite perfect!

Sailing on a Real Five-Masted Tall Ship
Royal Clipper isn’t simply designed to look like a sailing ship. The crew actually works the sails and rigging throughout the voyage. Guests are invited to help pull lines on occasion, and a free mast-climbing experience is offered.
Sail-away was one of my favorite traditions each evening. The music from 1492 played as the sails rose above us, creating a surprisingly emotional moment.
We did use the motor more than usual on this trip. The Adriatic was extremely hot and calm during our week, with limited wind. That can vary by destination and season, so sailing on Royal Clipper doesn’t necessarily mean traveling under sail every moment.
A couple of my friends have sailed Star Clippers in the Caribbean and said that they sailed almost the entire time!

Entertainment and Evenings Onboard Royal Clipper
Evenings were relaxed and social. A singing duo performed during cocktail hour and dinner, followed by entertainment at the Tropical Bar.
We also had local performers come aboard during our evening in Dubrovnik. During the day, there were morning yoga and occasional organized activities, such as knot-tying and cocktail classes.
The entertainment was intentionally low-key, which suited the overall experience. But everyone, including me, loved the talent show night where staff and guests showed off their singing, dancing, and more! I also really enjoyed the ABBA music one night after dinner!

Royal Clipper Spa and Other Onboard Extras
I was surprised to learn that there was a spa on board the Royal Clipper!
During our cruise, I booked a 50-minute massage for about €85 and thought it was an excellent value. The treatment area sits low in the ship, with portholes showing the water moving outside. It’s like a real-life sound machine!
Star Clippers also offered excursions in each port. They were reasonably priced, and there was a lot of variety. Among the group of travel journalists we were with, several people took the excursions and had great things to say. Matt and I chose to explore independently throughout our sailing.

Our 7-Night Royal Clipper Adriatic Sea Sailing Itinerary
Our sailing was the seven-night Classic Adriatic Escapes itinerary, traveling round-trip from Venice. It included stops in Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro.
Star Clippers only operates this exact route on select dates. I would not get too attached to finding this specific sailing. Instead, I think our itinerary is a great example of the types of European ports Star Clippers can reach. Looking at their other routes and itineraries, I would happily book many of them!
Day 1: Venice, Italy
We flew nonstop from Atlanta to Venice and arrived one full day before embarkation. I strongly recommend doing the same before any European cruise just to be safe.
It gave us time to adjust to the time change and removed some stress around possible flight delays.

We stayed at Violino d’Oro, a Leading Hotels of the World property near St. Mark’s Square. I booked it through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts. We received an upgraded canal-view room, early check-in, and a 4 PM checkout. Those benefits worked perfectly with our embarkation schedule and made maximizing our time in Venice stress-free!

Altogether, we had about 36 hours in Venice. We visited St. Mark’s Basilica, had rooftop drinks, shopped, ate well, and wandered the city. This was our second time in Venice, so it was nice just to relax!

Our sail-away from Venice was spectacular! We departed in golden-hour light with views over the city and watched the harbor pilots come and go.
Our Star Clippers sailing departed from a smaller port area in Venice, which makes the sail-away feel especially magical as you pass St. Mark’s Square, the Lido, and some of the city’s most iconic waterfront views.
Here is a video I took of our Royal Clipper sail-away in Venice!

Day 2: Pesaro, Italy
To be 100% honest, I love Italy, but Pesaro was probably our least memorable stop. We visited on a Sunday, and some shops were closed. The town has a long beachfront lined with beach clubs, and we spent some time at one of them.
If I sailed this itinerary again, I would plan to use Pesaro as an easy beach or recovery day. It would also be a great place to wear your swimsuit and relax.
Or, stay aboard the ship to enjoy the pools or swimming off the marine deck. It would offer a great chance to nap if you were experiencing any jet lag!

Day 3: Šibenik, Croatia
Šibenik immediately felt different. I woke up early and stood on the top deck as Royal Clipper entered through narrow waterways before docking directly in town. The approach itself was one of the highlights!
We spent the day exploring the historic center and visiting one of the fortresses (St. Michael’s Fortress) above town. It was charming, walkable, and initially one of our favorite stops. But, spoiler alert: they kept getting better and better!

Day 4: Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik was one of our busiest and best days! We started with a morning swim stop offshore, then arrived in Dubrovnik around 2 PM. We had the entire afternoon and evening in Dubrovnik as Royal Clipper did not depart until about 11 PM.
That late stay gave us plenty of time to experience the city!
Matt and I took a 2 Hour Game of Thrones Walking Tour, then walked the Dubrovnik city walls later in the afternoon, stopping for drinks at a charming bar right on the walls and watching the sunset. By evening, the crowds had thinned considerably.

So, if you are going to be in Dubrovnik, I highly recommend walking the walls at sunset, as they are very crowded at midday. Just make sure to search online for the Dubrovnik walls hours, as they do vary seasonally.
We stayed on the walls until after 8 PM, then ate dinner ashore at the foot of the Jesuit stairs. I had the black risotto, which I loved!
Our friends took the cable car up to take in sweeping views of Dubrovnik and enjoyed that. If time allows, we really want to visit Lokrum Island on our next visit. It is a lush nature reserve located a 15-minute ferry ride from the Old Town, and was also used in Game of Thrones filming.

Day 5: Kotor, Montenegro
Sailing into Kotor, Montenegro is one of the most dramatic arrivals in the Adriatic. The Bay of Kotor looks like a fjord, but it is actually a ria, or drowned river valley.
Royal Clipper winds through the long bay and narrow Verige Strait, which is only about 340 meters wide at its narrowest point, before reaching Kotor beneath the mountains.
Sailing through the Bay of Kotor, surrounded by mountains, was easily one of the most scenic parts of the week. I was so glad that I woke up earlier to be on deck for this, and it was equally magical leaving at sunset!

The medieval old town of Kotor itself was beautiful, but it was also extremely crowded during our visit. But that’s mainly because the old town is small, with very narrow streets, so everyone was in the same space.
It was a very hot August day, so we didn’t want to hike up to the fortress. But if we found ourselves in Kotor during cooler months, we absolutely would.
If I returned on a future cruise, I would probably spend more time on the water. A boat tour around the bay would be high on my list. And if it included swim stops, even better!
But we did head back to the boat a little early and used the afternoon to enjoy the Royal Clipper’s pools!

Day 6: Komiža, Vis, Croatia
Komiža, Croatia, was hands down my favorite port of the entire Star Clippers Adriatic Sea sailing trip!
It felt like an authentic fishing village rather than a major cruise destination, because that is actually what it is! The harbor was filled with catamarans and sailboats, which added to the atmosphere. Being on the far side of the island of Vis, it wasn’t full of day trippers. Well, other than us! We truly felt like part of the magic!
We walked, shopped, ate out twice, took plenty of photos, and drank Radler lemon beers at the beach bars near the sea.

We also ended up swimming at two of the rocky beaches. This became a recurring theme in Croatia, so I highly recommend wearing or packing a swimsuit.
I always like to pack my lightweight Dock and Bay Towels for things like this. I brought them on this trip, and we used them multiple days, both to sit on and dry off!
Komiža is also a filming location from Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. It’s no wonder why; it’s absolutely picturesque! Blue Cave tours were also available from town, and I would love to do this if and when I get back there!
I even found a local shop and bought a handmade tote bag from the sweetest local lady. She told me about her mother and grandmother’s sewing background and that the cotton was 60 years old. She had written on the bag in Croatian, and it loosely translated to, “Komiža is the compass of my soul. It keeps me from losing my way on the open sea and always guides me back to the right course.”

Day 7: Rovinj, Croatia
Rovinj, Croatia was another stop I would happily return to! We tendered ashore and spent the day exploring the old-town peninsula. The historic center was once an island before being connected to the mainland.
The waterfront had that perfect Euro-summer feeling. People were sunbathing on rocks, swimming, and jumping straight into the Adriatic.
One of our favorite stops in Rovinj was Puntulina, a beautiful waterfront restaurant built right into the rocky edge of Old Town. The tables cascade down toward the Adriatic, with unbelievably blue water just steps away. We stopped here for a drink, and the setting alone was a true pinch-me moment! It perfectly captured that laid-back, waterfront Euro summer atmosphere that made us fall in love with Rovinj.
After that, we ate lunch, explored toward the marina, and spent plenty of time just taking it all in!

Returning to Venice
Royal Clipper returned to Venice at sunrise on our final morning. It was almost as magical as the golden, sunlit departure just a week earlier, as the city was only then starting to wake up.
We had a private transfer arranged through Star Clippers and comfortably made our flight from Venice back to Atlanta.
That timing worked well for us, although I would still leave plenty of room for unexpected delays when booking a same-day flight home. Many passengers opted to spend an extra day or two in Venice after the cruise.
Personally, I would let airfare prices and flight deals guide how long to add on to either end of this Star Clippers sailing trip.

Star Clippers Europe Cruises & Sailing Itineraries
Our Classic Adriatic Escapes route is only one of many Star Clippers itineraries in Europe. Their Mediterranean sailings visit ports throughout Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Greece, France, and beyond.
Honestly, I would sail almost any of them!
After this trip, I would choose largely based on the ports that excite me most. Some itineraries combine famous European destinations with islands and smaller coastal towns that require more effort to reach independently.
That is especially appealing to me. Places like Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, and the Greek Islands fit beautifully into this style of travel.
I also think coastal Europe is simply made for exploring by boat, especially in the Adriatic and the larger Mediterranean. And, on these beautiful tall ships, the sailing itself becomes part of the experience rather than just transportation between destinations.
The variety of European itineraries is one of the biggest reasons I would sail with Star Clippers again!

Star Clippers Caribbean Sailings
Star Clippers also spends part of the year sailing in the Caribbean, which may be especially appealing to U.S. travelers.
These itineraries offer the same tall-ship experience without requiring a long-haul flight to Europe or dealing with significant jet lag. Although, in the words of the great poet Taylor Swift, “jet lag is a choice,” and that doesn’t keep me from taking over a half dozen trips to Europe this year alone!
The Caribbean sailing itineraries can also be more affordable, depending on the route and cabin category.
Personally, the European routes excite me most because I love combining sailing with European destinations. However, the Caribbean could be a fantastic introduction to Star Clippers and offer a more relaxed, beach-style vacation. Some itineraries even take you to iconic Caribbean landmarks such as the Soggy Dollar Bar!
Typically, the Caribbean sailings are from early December to late March.

How Much Does a Star Clippers Cruise Cost?
Star Clippers pricing varies by itinerary, sailing date, and cabin category. One thing that can be confusing is the difference between the Brochure Rate and the lower Advance Purchase Rate.
The Brochure Rate is the published base fare. The Advance Purchase Rate, or APR, reflects the discounted fare available on many sailings. That APR can make a big difference. So, when comparing Star Clippers cruises, I would focus more on the current advance-purchase pricing than the brochure rate.
You can see the rate chart by cabin class on every separate itinerary as you browse the Star Clippers website.
Cost of Our Royal Clipper Adriatic Sea Sailing Trip
Our sailing was hosted, but our Category 2 cabin would have cost roughly $3,400 per person, or about $6,800 for two, based on our booking confirmation, which included port fees and prepaid gratuities.
Matt and I spent $418 onboard during the week. That included Wi-Fi, a lot of drinks, my massage, and a few other small purchases.
We did not book any excursions since we preferred to explore the ports independently. But like the drinks, they were very reasonably priced!
So, for 7 nights including meals and access to these incredible ports, I think Star Clippers is a great value!

Why I Think Star Clippers Is a Great Value
Honestly, this was one of my biggest takeaways from the trip! Royal Clipper looks and feels like an experience that should cost much more. You get a small passenger count, excellent service, beautiful itineraries, and access to unique ports.
The onboard spending also felt reasonable. Drinks were inexpensive, my massage was fairly priced, and the excursions appeared affordable. We never felt like we were constantly being upsold or nickel-and-dimed.
To me, Star Clippers feels less like traditional over-the-top luxury and more like exceptional value with great service. It is relaxed, adventurous, and special without requiring a luxury-cruise budget.
Some Caribbean sailings can be even less expensive (starting at around $ 2,000 per person), making them especially appealing to U.S. travelers.

How to Book a Star Clippers Sailing
Booking with Star Clippers works a little differently than booking many mainstream cruises. You can browse ships, destinations, departure dates, and specific itineraries on the Star Clippers website. From there, you can request a quote or call to book.
Because pricing varies by itinerary, cabin category, and departure date, I would compare several sailings before choosing one. I would also pay close attention to the current Advance Purchase Rate. Those discounted fares can be much lower than the published Brochure Rate. There are also several options for additional discounts or onboard credits from time to time!
That said, for me, the ports would be the deciding factor first. Then I would compare dates, cabin categories, and current pricing.

Who I Think Would Love Sailing With Star Clippers
I think Star Clippers is a great fit for travelers who care as much about the destination as they do about the ship. Which sounds absurd, because these ships are incredible! It’s the ability to access such unique ports aboard such a special ship that makes Star Clippers special!
It especially suits adventurous travelers, independent explorers, and anyone who loves sailing. Couples, groups of friends, and multi-generational families would all fit in well.
It is also a good match for travelers who appreciate personal service without a formal atmosphere. If your ideal day includes wandering a coastal town, swimming, and stopping for waterfront drinks, this style of travel makes a lot of sense.
I also think it appeals to people who want the ease of cruising without the mega-ship experience. That said, it may not be the best fit if you want huge resort-style amenities, nonstop entertainment, or elaborate children’s programming.

Would I Sail With Star Clippers Again?
Absolutely!
I came home even more interested in this entire travel style. While I loved Royal Clipper, the itinerary was what really stayed with me, and I would happily book another Star Clippers sailing in Europe, especially one with ports I have not visited before.
There is something special about unpacking once, spending full days exploring, and then sailing away somewhere new each evening. And doing so without being in those mega-ports with the huge cruise ships. It was the magic I felt on that small TradeWinds catamaran sailing, combined with the freedom and excitement we feel on our other trips to Europe.
We never felt like we were simply cruising past Europe. We felt like we were actually experiencing it. Royal Clipper made the journey between destinations part of the experience!
