We just returned from a week-long cruise with Star Clippers on one of their beautiful 5-masted sailing ships, the Royal Clipper. We sailed the Classic Adriatic Escapes itinerary, traveling round-trip from Venice through Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro. It was an amazing trip, and one of our favorite memories was visiting Dubrovnik, Croatia, and taking a guided Game of Thrones tour.
So, today, I wanted to share the details of our Game of Thrones tour with you in case you’re interested in booking it yourself when visiting Dubrovnik!

Our Game of Thrones Tour in Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is considered one of the most beautiful coastal cities in Europe. It’s essentially a preserved medieval city surrounded by rugged mountains and protected by a massive defensive wall. Its honey-colored limestone streets are lined with cute cafes, cosmopolitan shopping, and plenty of great restaurants.
The entire city gives off Game of Thrones vibes with huge bell towers, massive city gates, beautiful docks and harbors, and imposing staircases leading to ancient churches. It was one of our top stops during our Royal Clipper cruise, and the Game of Thrones tour made it even better!
Sailing into “King’s Landing” aboard Royal Clipper, the world’s largest square rigged sailing ship in service, was one of those pinch me moments that felt almost too magical to be real.

Our ship was in port, tendering right into the heart of Old Town Dubrovnik from 2:00 pm until 11:00 pm. So, we were a bit limited when booking a Game of Thrones tour in Dubrovnik. But, we found one with amazing reviews that took place from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm which worked out great for us!
We booked the Dubrovnik: Original Game of Thrones Tour. They offer a variety of time slots and even an extended tour that includes nearby Lokrum Island. So, use the GetYourGuide widget below to check real time availability for your trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

How Much of Game of Thrones Was Filmed in Dubrovnik?
So, what should you expect to see on your Dubrovnik Game of Thrones tour?
Dubrovnik served as the principal Game of Thrones filming location for King’s Landing, the capital of Westeros. Starting in Season 2 of HBO’s Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik became central to the show’s identity, doubling as multiple landmarks throughout the Seven Kingdoms and beyond.
The towering Fort Lovrijenac doubled as the majestic Red Keep, while the historic Jesuit Staircase provided the backdrop for Cersei Lannister’s notorious “Walk of Shame”.
Other scenes were shot there, including Fort Bokar (where character conversations overlooking Blackwater Bay were staged), Pile Harbour (representing the docks of King’s Landing), Minčeta Tower (used for the House of the Undying in Qarth), and the nearby island of Lokrum, which transformed into the magical city of Qarth.

Our First-Hand Game of Thrones Tour Experience
We really enjoyed our Game of Thrones tour and would definitely recommend it.
Honestly, we love taking GetYourGuide tours and have taken them all over the world. We’ve never been let down and have always felt they were good value. I get so much more out of any location or experience when an expert guide narrates and explains the important places and events.
Overall, it was a great way to re-live the fun, the excitement, and the little mischievous moments of one of our favorite series, Game of Thrones.
NOTE: This Game of Thrones tour does not include the entry fee to Fort Lovrijenac (the Red Keep), which is currently 15 EUR. Tickets to Fort Lovrijenac can be purchased at the Fort’s entrance during the tour. We purchased our ticket in advance and ended up buying the full Dubrovnik pass, which includes the Fort and the city walls, for a total of 40 EUR.
If you are taking a tour that includes Lokrum Island, the water ferry fare is usually an extra 30 EUR.

Game of Thrones Tour Stops & Points of Interest
I want to go over each place you’ll see on your Game of Thrones tour in Dubrovnik. Remember that this is a walking tour, and you’ll be on your feet for about two hours as you stroll through various areas of Dubrovnik.
There are a lot of options for Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik, but if you book others, they may not visit all of these popular Game of Thrones filming locations.
The Jesuit Stairs (Walk of Shame)
The grand Baroque staircase descending from Gundulić Square. This is the unmistakable site where Cersei Lannister was forced to begin her penance walk in the Season 5 finale.

Fort Lovrijenac (The Red Keep)
Perched on a 37-meter-high cliff just outside the city walls, this 11th-century fortress stands in for the Red Keep.
It hosted Joffrey’s name day tournament, Cersei and Littlefinger’s “Knowledge is power” clash, and numerous balcony scenes overlooking King’s Landing.

Pile Gate
The main drawbridge entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old Town, featured during the Season 2 riot where King Joffrey was pelted with manure after sending Myrcella away.
Pile Harbour (Blackwater Bay)
The small bay and stone pier directly below Fort Lovrijenac. It served as Blackwater Bay, where Sansa and Littlefinger held secret chats, and Myrcella set sail for Dorne.

Minčeta Tower (House of the Undying)
The highest point on Dubrovnik’s outer walls. The circular exterior base served as the House of the Undying in Qarth, where Daenerys searched for a way inside to rescue her stolen dragons.
We saw it from afar but didn’t go all of the way up to it on our tour.
Bokar Fortress
A semicircular fortress along the seaward defense wall where Tyrion Lannister and Lord Varys stood discussing defense strategies ahead of the Battle of Blackwater.

Rector’s Palace
The inner courtyard and Gothic-Renaissance stone staircase served as the atrium for the Spice King’s mansion in Qarth when Daenerys requested ships for her army. Our tour didn’t take all of the the way here, but your Dubrovnik Pass also include admission to Rector’s Palace if you want to visit it before or after.
The Game of Thrones Store
Our tour ended at a Game of Thrones-themed shop. It had a ton of memorabilia and apparel that make great souvenirs. The shop has a full-size Iron Throne replica and various swords you can take pictures with.

Consider Taking a Game of Thrones Tour That Includes Lokrum Island
Did you know that several important scenes were filmed on Lokrum Island, just off the coast of Dubrovnik?
Lokrum’s botanical gardens and Benedictine monastery represented Qarth in the show, and the monastery now houses an official Iron Throne replica.
Lokrum Island is gorgeous and filled with interesting sights and exotic animals like peacocks. The entire island is the love project of Archduke Maximilian of Austria, who bought the island in the 19th century.
If you have the time, I would recommend booking the three-hour Game of Thrones Tour + Lokrum Island, which includes all the filming locations in Dubrovnik and on Lokrum Island. This tour is an amazing way for the entire family to enjoy reliving the Game of Thrones universe and even get a picture in a real-life replica of the Iron Throne.
Walk Dubrovnik’s City Walls
We really enjoyed walking the Dubrovnik city walls after our tour. So, I also highly recommend buying the Dubrovnik City Pass, which includes access to Fort Lovrijenac and the city walls.
These massive walls rise above the city, offering magnificent views of the sea and the city itself. Several people told us to skip this part of our excursion due to crowds, but we were so glad we didn’t!
We took our Game of Thrones tour around 4:00 pm, and when it was over at 6:00 pm, we headed straight to the walls. It was the perfect time to walk the walls because the crowds had begun to thin, and the setting sun illuminated the walls, the city, and the sea in an otherworldly way.
We found a seat at a little bar along a battlement, and had two magical drinks as we looked out over the Adriatic Sea at sunset. Honestly, it was one of the best moments of our entire trip to Croatia!

Book This Game of Thrones Tour in Dubrovnik
We absolutely loved taking a Game of Thrones tour in Dubrovnik, Croatia. It was the perfect way to re-live the series and pay homage to our favorite places in the special world of Westeros.
Our tour was well-led and engaging, and it felt like good value for the money. We’re so glad we took the time to walk the city walls and have a cold drink while the sun set over the Adriatic.
Be sure to consider adding Lokrum Island to your tour, as it has some additional filming locations and other special sights. Dubrovnik is a magical place, where a time filled with fire and ice seems to come alive amid the bustling streets and alleys of one of the Mediterranean’s most popular vacation destinations.
