Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to visit one of Peru’s lesser-known parts: the Ancash region. You may not have heard of it because, up until recently, it required an 8-hour mountain bus ride to get there. But in July, Latam Airlines launched a new direct flight from Lima to Huaraz, Peru. While in this area, I fell in love with a hotel near Carhuaz that I didn’t even stay atโthe Wayarumi Sky Hotel.
We stopped here for breakfast before heading up to the Llanganuco Lagoons. The food was fantastic! We also had the opportunity to tour this small boutique property, and I was blown away. This is exactly where I would choose to stay on my next trip to Carhuaz and Huarhuaz, Peru. And here are all of the reasons why!
The Wayarumi Sky Hotel in Carhuaz, Peru
Nestled in the foothills of the Cordillera Blanca, the Wayarumi Hotel has only six rooms. It offers the chance to reconnect with the beauty of nature. This tranquil setting is the perfect place for your family to unplug and reconnect.
Plus, breakfast is included, and dinner is available onsite, making it truly a vacation for everyone. The small family that owns it pours their heart and soul into this tranquil retreat. As someone with a deep love for hospitality, especially the restaurant business, I appreciated the hustle and passion that was undeniable during my visit.
I will soon share a photo tour of the Wayarumi! However, I want to quickly tell you more about the Ancash region and the new direct flight from Lima. This will help you truly appreciate just how special yet accessible the Wayarumi Sky Hotel is.
Peru’s Ancash Region
Located north of Lima, the Ancash region of Peru stretches from sea to sky! In the western part, you’ll find charming coastal communities nestled along the Pacific Ocean. To the east, the highest peaks of the Peruvian Andes draw visitors from all around the world within Huarascรกn National Park.
The capital of Ancash is Huaraz, a sprawling transportation hub and gateway to adventure! It is about 45 minutes away from the airport. It has a lot to offer, and I enjoyed staying there on my trip. However, for a future trip, I would love to escape the hustle and bustle and stay here at the Wayrumi near Carhuaz.
The most popular pastimes in the Huaylas Valley (located between the white and black mountains) involve hiking, climbing, and exploring. It’s a wonderful location for adventurous families, and I actually think the Wayarumi is in the perfect location for all of that!
On our trip, we often found ourselves heading this way (past the hotel) for most of our activities!
New Direct Flights To Huaraz, Peru
As I mentioned above, Latam just launched a new daily flight from Lima to Huaraz Airport. This opens up the Ancash region to families like us, which is why I am excited to tell you about this hotel!
I will note that the airport is actually 50 minutes from Huaraz but only 15 minutes from Carhuaz. On the other hand, the Wayarumi Hotel is just outside of Carhuaz and about 20 minutes from the airport. And I think it’s just so special! I am sure you can see that in my photos so far!
The Wayarumi Hotel in Carhuaz
With incredible mountain views in both directions, the Wayarumi Sky Hotel looks like something straight out of a catalog. Walking through, I felt like I had stumbled upon something other photographers and editors would love to set foot in. But, as I learned more about the property and the family behind it, I realized that families like mine would find it even more special.
While for most in Peru, this would be considered a major splurge; I was shocked when I realized that we could stay here for less than the cost of most Holiday Inns in the United States. So, keep reading!
The Wayarumi is a place where you can find peace and comfort. You can do as much or as little as you’d like. Its location makes it a wonderful home base for your mountain adventures! Starting and ending the day with incredible local farm-to-table style meals.
This boutique hotel in Carhuaz, Peru, is also dedicated to sustainability, using renewable energy and organic farming practices that carry through to their restaurants.
First, let’s talk about the rooms!
Boutique Rooms Straight Out Of A Magazine
The Wayarumi has just a handful of rooms, one of which is a stunning Premium Deluxe Suite with a kitchen and a lovely soaking tub. The guestrooms are unassuming from the outside but charming and subtle. I was blown away as I walked inside.
Click here for room types and videos showing each one. Rates vary based on dates and occupancy, but I see rooms at under $100 per night for a single-occupancy King suite next month. With a family of six in that room, it shows around $180 per night for those dates.
It’s always so surprising to me how far your money can go in places outside of the USA, including places like Fiji. International travel does not have to be saved for a bucket list. In fact, Peru is easy! I didn’t even have a time change and my flight from Atlanta to Lima was only around 6 hours.

The rooms I saw had beautiful private balconies with stunning mountain views. They were so peaceful and serene. In addition, the large sliding doors opened up to create a lovely indoor-outdoor retreat.
The photos above were taken in the same spot, one looking east in the direction of the white mountains and the second looking west toward the black mountains.
Imagine enjoying a warm cup of coffee out there in the morning and a nice glass of red wine at sunset.
Moving back inside, doesn’t this bathroom look like it belongs in a magazine? The design is stunning, and you can actually see one of the tallest peaks in the Cordillera Blanca just outside that window. Honestly, it was such a fun place to photograph!
I love the rock wall and floor that they did in the bathrooms. It really feels like they have brought the outside in, yet it was clean and modern.
The photos below don’t do the soaking tub justice. It was oversized and so lush. This is located in the Premium Deluxe Suite at the Wayarumi. In addition, the sliding doors adjacent to it are fully open. Even the sound of the water filling the tub was soothing.
The Restaurant At The Wayarumi by Anden Verde
The Wayarumi Restaurant is located in the center of the property, just a short walk from your room. It prides itself on using local ingredients and modern culinary techniques. I had the opportunity to dine at their restaurant in Huaraz, Anden Verde, and it was incredible!
They specialize in craft cocktails and unique modern Peruvian food. Everything our group had was marvelous!
I will work on gathering this information, but I am almost certain that breakfast is included in your stay. While there, I also recall a mention of dinner possibly being included with some rates. While I wasn’t able to verify this online, I will look into it and update this post accordingly. But, when we talked with the owner, they seemed very motivated to provide a concierge level of service, including helping you set up activities, transportation, and more.
I love the cute little children’s swing and high chair that they include. We saw a young family enjoying both as we had our breakfast. There is also a bar in the same room.
Peaceful Carhuaz Property With Stunning Mountain Views
What really stood out to me was how peaceful this property was. Located next to a pre-Inca archaeological site called Pampa Hirca, it was compact, yet it felt like every corner had a new place to retreat to, whether it be a hammock or a walking path.
If your family wants to truly embrace the local culture, history, flora, and fauna of the Ancash region, this is a great place to do so!
The Wayarumi is located along the slopes of Cerro Hishpe and offers breathtaking views of the Blanca and Negra mountain ranges, which border the Callejรณn de Huaylas.
The Wayarumi Is Central To Popular Ancash Region Activities
Sure, you could spend your time at the hotel enjoying a warm campfire, stargazing, or simply walking along the footpaths; there is so much more to explore!
Many popular local activities will pick you up at your hotel, so make sure to read through the listings in their entirety before booking activities. Here are some great activities that I recommend near the Wayarumi. The longer mountain treks are best suited for teenagers and older kids. Be sure to drink Muna tea as soon as you land to help you adjust to the elevation change.
