This summer, we had the amazing opportunity to visit the French and Italian Rivieras and spend almost a week in Rome, Italy. At the end of the trip, we took the train to Venice, Italy, where we spent three nights. We decided to stay on the island of Murano at the Hyatt Centric Murano Venice, which is located about a mile from Venice.
Hyatt Centric Murano Venice
Today, I want to share our experience staying at the Hyatt Centric Murano Venice, as well as general information about Murano itself. As always, I’ll provide first-hand, detailed information so that you can make the best decision about whether this location will work for your family!
So, in this post, I’ll cover several different topics regarding the Hyatt Centric Murano Venice and its location and share useful tips about what we learned from our experience:
- Overview of Murano, Italy
- What Makes Murano Special?
- Hyatt Centric Murano Location
- Hyatt Centric Rooms & Restaurants
- Review: The Hyatt Centric Murano
Overall, we loved Hyatt Centric Murano Venice and the island of Murano. It was a great vacation choice for our family. It was the tail end of a 3-week trip to Europe (starting in Antibes, France), and staying on Murano gave us a nice reprieve from the crowds!
Overview of Murano, Italy
Murano is an island located just north of Venice, Italy. It is only reachable by water taxi or private boat. The island is about a square mile in size and is home to charming boutiques, shops, restaurants, and cafes.
Historically, Murano was the glass capital of the world because of the density of the island’s artisanal glassmaking businesses. People from all over the globe visit Murano to watch glass being blown and to purchase some of the finest quality hand-made glass on earth.
Its location in the middle of the lagoon means it’s very near Venice, Italy, and other popular tourist destinations, such as the islands of Burano and Lido.
Why Murano Is A Great Place To Stay
Murano is a beautiful island that combines an authentic, unhurried Venetian ambiance with modern amenities, dining, and lodging.
While Venice, Italy is an incredibly busy tourist destination, Murano feels quieter and more rustic. It exudes a sense of timelessness. As we walked the cobblestone streets along the water, we couldn’t help but feel like we were in another age, a time when life was slower and lived more deliberately. Murano combines much of the romantic magic and exotic beauty of Venice but without the intense bustle of massive crowds.
That said, it can be more sleepy. Generally, at night, even in June, only a couple of restaurants were open outside of our hotel. But that didn’t bother us since we were pretty wiped out and had two kids with us anyway. However, if you are a couple looking for more nightlife, it may not be the place for you.
Murano Glass Making
Murano is home to some of the finest glass-blowing businesses in the world. Everywhere we went, we saw shops selling breathtaking glass figurines, vases, tableware, and jewelry. The level of artistry and mastery of the craft is astounding. I searched high and low for the perfect wine glass and ended up finding the most beautiful one that I had ever seen.
It’s a great place to purchase fine glassware, take a glass factory tour, and even try your hand at blowing glass yourself. Our family even did a glass-blowing experience at the Gino Mazzuccato Glass Factory. You can read all about it here!
Murano Is Very Close To Venice And Burano
So, why not just stay in Venice and visit Murano? Well, you can do both! We actually liked taking the Venice Water Taxi to various stops in Venice, allowing us to experience a new area each time without having to retrace our steps!
Murano is just a mile from Venice, so only a 20-minute water taxi ride to the heart of the city and Venice tourist attractions like St. Mark’s Square, St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, and the Grand Canal. About three miles to the north is the small island of Burano, which offers many shops and restaurants and is famous for its hand-made lace industry.
During our entire Europe trip, it rained only once, and that was literally the minute we arrived in Burano. So, I didn’t get the gorgeous sunny photos you see online, but it was beautiful nonetheless.
Hyatt Centric Murano Venice
Now that you know more about Murano, I want to share more details about the Hyatt Centric Murano, including its location and the rooms/amenities. I spent a lot of time going back and forth about staying on Murano vs Venice, but this ended up being a great fit for our family.
Location: The Hyatt Centric Murano Venice
The Hyatt Centric Murano Venice is centrally located in Murano and has a water taxi stop (Murano Museo) right out front. It’s near numerous shops and restaurants and several unique locations on the island. So, before I go into details about the hotel itself, I want to highlight the area around it.
Hyatt Centric Murano Map
From The Hyatt Centric Murano Venice, you can easily get to the following:
- Venice Water Taxi stop
- grocery store/restaurants
- Murano Glass Museum
- many glass shops
#1 The Hyatt Centric Murano Water Taxi Stop
The public water taxi bus system in the Venitian lagoon is called “Vaporetto” and has stops (docks) located all over the numerous islands and their canals. Hyatt Centric Murano Venice is located directly on a major water taxi stop, so getting a taxi is reliable and fast. There are many different lines and schedules that take you to other locations in the lagoon. The line that takes you from Murano to Venice comes to the hotel about every 20 minutes. They start early in the morning, around 6 a.m., and go through late in the evening, around 11 p.m. There is a more intermittent overnight service as well.
TIP: Use the Apple or Google Maps “Transit” map to see the Vaporetto water taxi schedule. The Hyatt Centric Murano is located at the “Murano Museo” water taxi Stop.
It’s easy and most cost-effective to get a multi-day water taxi ticket to cover the length of your stay. I’ll share more about this at the end of the post.
#2 Grocery Store Near The Hyatt Centric Murano
Hyatt Centric Murano Venice is also very close to a local grocery store named Supermercato Coop. Supermercato Coop is perfect if you want to stock up on food, snacks, laundry supplies, or other items. Right next to the grocery store is a gelato shop called Gelato di Natura.
Next to that is a great coffee shop and diner named Sottovento. Sottovento has a beautiful little courtyard where many of the Morano locals gather to hang out. We got coffee and spritzers there twice and enjoyed the local atmosphere under the warm Italian sun.
Because Murano is smaller and less busy than Venice, it tends to be a bit sleepier, meaning activities and stores usually wind down early in the evening. When we went in early summer, we noticed many of the restaurants closed by around 6 p.m., and several of the diners stayed closed. We had to walk around a bit and look for open places. So be aware of that when planning meals.
We found the Hyatt Centric Murano Venice’s three dining options were the only consistently available options for sit-down dining later in the evening.
#3 The Murano Glass Museum
Next to the Hyatt Centric Murano Venice is the Murano Glass Museum. It’s the only glass museum in the Venetian lagoon and contains thousands of gorgeous pieces of glass art. The museum has many exhibits and is a great way to learn about the history, science, and art of glassmaking.
#4 The Hyatt Centric Is Near Many Glass Shops
Within a few minutes walk of the Hyatt Centric Murano Venice are several glass shops that sell authentic Murano glass, which is hand-made in traditional kilns on the island. These shops are so much fun to visit, and you’ll find no shortage of spectacular glass pieces to admire and purchase. These stores will wrap your purchase and ship it overseas to your home.
HOTEL REVIEW: The Hyatt Centric Murano Venice Hotel
The Hyatt Centric Murano Venice is located on the eastern side of Murano Island. It overlooks the Murano Grand Canal, a waterway winding through the center of the island. The hotel has a wonderful outdoor dining patio overlooking the canal, which is a great way to take in the Murano charm while dining or having a drink.
The Hyatt Centric Murano Venice is the main hotel on the island of Murano and features 119 guestrooms, including 31 duplex suites and two premium suites. The hotel has three separate restaurants offering diverse dining experiences, from formal sit-down to casual lounge options. It also has modern amenities like room service, a fitness center, a spa, laundry facilities, and free Wi-Fi access.
The History Of The Hyatt Centric Murano Venice
The Hyatt Centric Murano has a fascinating history dating back to the 14th century. Its history is indicative of the diverse arts and culture of the island. The hotel was the first hotel to open on the island of Murano, and it was built within the old walls of a former glass factory. Prior to that, the building was a church. You can feel this history in the way the interior is decorated, with beautiful glass sculptures on end tables, glass art on the walls, and magnificent ornate glass chandeliers hanging overhead.
Hotel Room Options and Floorplans
As I mentioned above, the Hyatt Centric offers guestrooms, duplexes, and an assortment of premium suites. Some of the rooms overlook the canal, and some the courtyard, so be sure to verify when booking.
Hyatt Centric Murano Guestrooms
The guestrooms range in size from 247 sq/ft to 290 sq/ft and come with twin bed or king options. Some premium king floor plans are available.
The guestrooms are decorated with earth-tone accents of chocolate and beige hues, hand-crafted glass artwork, large mirrors, and bespoke wallpaper. The upstairs guest room hallways are decorated with beautiful collections of Murano glass.
They also have duplex rooms, which are two-story and more spacious. During our stay at the Hyatt Centric Murano Venice, we stayed in a duplex with our two teenagers. The duplex room is perfect for families with kids. They have high ceilings, and ours overlooked the courtyard through a series of high brick arches that were a relic of the building’s glass factory days.
The Hyatt Centric Murano duplex room has a King bed in the loft area and a convertible sofa in the main room. When we arrived, they already had the couch and trundle set up and split into two single beds. This was great because Abby and Jake could each have their own bed. Plus, it left the center of the room nice and open!
The duplexes have large windows with blackout curtains. The first-floor door does slide open. It’s not a balcony, but just a railing and some open air. Upstairs, above the loft, is a big skylight that can be electronically opened and closed or covered with blackout shades. It was so nice to open the window and let in the cool Venetian air!
The rooms have a TV, minibar, and a safe. The bathrooms are a decent size, with a walk-in shower, a toilet, and a bidet. The duplexes are spacious by European standards, and our kids really enjoyed the extra privacy that came with the adults being upstairs and separated from the kids!
Also, they had Murano glasses to drink out of and the best NUXE toiletries! The lotion is my absolute favorite!
Hyatt Centric Murano Dining Options
The Hyatt Centric Murano Venice has three restaurants in addition to room service. These restaurants are open late and could be your only late-day dining option, as the local Murano restaurants and diners may close early. We ate at all of them, and everything was great!
Rivalonga Bar
The Rivalonga Bar is a casual restaurant with a small indoor seating area and a beautiful outdoor patio overlooking the Murano Grand Canal. Guests can drink and snack while taking in the view of the canal. We ate there a couple of times and enjoyed the slower atmosphere and boatwatching.
Osteriva
Osteriva is the formal sit-down restaurant at Hyatt Centric Murano Venice. It has a great fine-dining menu and intimate ambiance, making it a perfect place to get an authentic Venetian dish in a classy setting. The interior looks like a stylish bioclimatic greenhouse that feels serene and private.
We ate dinner here one night, and it was top-notch. One of my favorite meals from our entire trip!
Spritz & Fizz
Spritz & Fizz is the cocktail bar at Hyatt Centric Murano Venice. It is classy and fun and adjacent to the hotel lounge. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the menu had a wide assortment of appetizers and main dishes. Matt got a fantastic meat and cheese tray and absolutely loved it!
It’s the perfect place to try a favorite local drink, like the Aperol spritz. One night, we heard an excellent singer in the lounge, so be sure to check the entertainment schedule.
TIPS: Murano & Venice Public Water Taxi Bus Service Tickets
Before wrapping up, I want to circle back to the Venice Water Taxi. It is a key part of this experience, and you need to be familiar with it.
For tickets, you can buy single-trip tickets or multi-day water taxi passes, called a Venice Card. We purchased the three-day pass for each person, and it saved some money, considering how much we used it. If staying on Murano, it’s much more cost effective to buy a pass.
If you want a more exclusive taxi service, numerous private water taxi charters are available.
We Recommend Hyatt Centric Murano Venice
The Hyatt Centric Murano Venice was a perfect choice for our family. Staying in Murano meant we didn’t have to navigate the incredibly busy tourist scene in Venice, which felt exhausting after an already long trip.
Murano was slower-paced yet fun, and it was only a brief water taxi ride to Venice. I personally loved taking in the views of Venice from the water taxi—we saw it from every angle!
Murano allowed us to experience the Venetian lagoon in a more traditional, authentic way that felt inviting and cozy. We had coffee and fed pigeons with the locals, which is something you definitely couldn’t do in Venice!
The Hyatt Centric Murano Venice was a perfect hotel for us. We liked the spacious duplex rooms with a loft that allowed everyone to spread out. The outdoor patio overlooking the canal was romantic and idyllic, reminding us how far we had traveled from home!
Overall, I would absolutely recommend the Hyatt Centric Murano Venice to those who want a slightly more laid-back experience during their trip to Venice. And, if you are traveling with teenagers like us, you’ll appreciate the large duplex rooms!
