After spending last week in Fiji, I was surprised by two things. First, Fiji offers many activities beyond the beach, making it a perfect destination for families who love adventure and relaxation. Second, I was impressed at how affordable a family trip to Fiji can be. Both are great reasons for families to consider Fiji for their next family vacation.

Today, I want to examine the costs of visiting Fiji and see if you can plan a trip for under $5000.

How To Plan a Family Trip to Fiji For $5000 Price Breakdown

Fiji Tourism hosted me for this trip; however, all opinions and research today are my own.

Planning A Family Trip to Fiji

Before my trip, I thought that Fiji was a far-off, magical destination reserved for the very top of your bucket list. The first two are true; however, a family trip to Fiji is much less expensive and easier to plan than you may think.

As always, many variables are at play, including when you visit, the ages of your children, where you stay, and what level of luxury you desire.

For this post, I am going to assume that you have two children, ages 8 and 10, and are sharing one room.  I have teenagers, and we often need and want to book adjoining rooms as they like having their own beds. This further complicates things and increases costs, but I will also include a quick estimate at the end for a family like mine traveling with teenagers.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Fiji?

On this trip, I asked multiple locals (in the tourism industry) when the best time to visit Fiji is. The consensus is that people travel to Fiji all year as it’s a tropical destination. However, like most family travel destinations, it tends to be busiest when children are out of school.

Generally, the dry season is May – September, and the wet season is October – April. However, as someone very familiar with hurricane season in Florida, some of our best weather is during peak hurricane season. You just need to be aware that a tropical cyclone is possible and purchase travel insurance.

Additionally, I was told that the Australian & New Zealand summer holidays, which tend to be mid-December through January, are very busy. This is regardless of the fact that it’s the middle of the wet season. Likewise, the winter months of June through August can be busy as visitors escape the cold in their hometowns.

A couple of sweet spots are February through May and August through November.  I also asked about the week of Thanksgiving here in the United States, one of my family’s favorite times to travel. We visited Rio de Janeiro last year and Greece the year before. I was told that visiting Fiji that week would be a nice off-peak window.  Additionally, our Spring Break is not a bad time to visit either!  For this trip, I was there the second week in May, and we had sunshine every day. It was hotter and humid on the islands and more breezy inland.

So, for the purpose of this post, I am going to look at a window when our children in the United States are likely out of school: Spring Break.

Can You Plan A Family Trip To Fiji For $5000?

I think you can, but we are about to find out! Come along as I price out a family trip to Fiji for two adults and two children during our Spring Break 2025 (March 22 – March 29).

For the purpose of this post, I am including airfare, accommodations, and basic meals in that price. Most resorts include many activities, including nonmotorized watersports.

Additionally, most of the accommodation prices quoted here include taxes. Tipping is not customary (although always welcome), and most resorts in Fiji do not have added resort fees. So, the price is what it is, as opposed to in the United States, where those three items can easily add an extra 40%. Also, prices in this post are in USD.

For an additional cost, you can always add Fiji family excursions, such as EcoTrax Fiji, the award-winning Sigatoka River Cruises, or a day trip to Cloud 9 Fiji for Mom and Dad! The complimentary kid’s clubs are fantastic at these Fiji family resorts, and you can even add babysitting or nanny service very cheaply, allowing for some alone time.

Airfare To Fiji

Airfare will take up the largest chunk of the budget, so let’s knock that out first!

Fiji Airways offers direct flights to Nadi from Las Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver, Canada.  For this example, we will fly directly to Nadi, Fiji, from Los Angeles, California.

MAJOR UPDATE: Starting in December 2024, Fiji Airways will have a brand new direct flight from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Nadi, Fiji! And the introductory prices look fantastic!

The screenshots below show that you can fly a family of four nonstop from Los Angeles to Nadi for as low as $3075 round trip. This is a lite fare that doesn’t include checked bags. The price of flights with checked bags (value fare) is $3425.

Screenshot of Flight prices to Fiji

However, you probably only need one checked bag and can carry on the rest.   Since the cost to check a bag would be over $300 total, I would personally book one adult on a value ticket for $999. Then book the other three people’s lite tickets for $2175, making the total $3174. You would also need to pay to select seats ahead of time.  There is a higher-priced ticket that includes seat selection, but in my opinion, it’s more cost-effective to add that on a la carte.  Budget around $480 total for this.

To summarize, in this example, over Spring Break, you can fly direct to Fiji from Los Angeles for as low as $3075.  However, we will budget $3654 for one checked bag and seat selection.

I will note that Fiji Airways frequently has sales. Sign up for their emails or follow them on social media for the best deals. In fact, last week, you could have flown round trip to Fiji for $709 per person on select dates!

You will also need to plan your airport transfers. Rosie Holidays is a wonderful local business to do this with. I recommend booking these with them or through your hotel before your family trip to Fiji. Rates vary by destination.

Family Accommodations in Fiji

That leaves us with under $1400 for accommodations. For this post, I want to price out mid-level and above places to stay versus economy-type accommodations. So, I am specifically including full-service family resorts on the beach.

Of course, Fiji also has a number of adult-only properties and is a popular place for honeymooners and adults who need to get away.

But is Fiji good for families?  Absolutely!  I saw many children making lasting memories with their families and enjoying time with their resort nannies and in the kids’ club.   I literally saw children running away from their parents and into the arms of the nannies on more than one occasion. The love and attention given to the families I saw visiting Fiji was impressive. What makes Fiji great is the people!

Using Booking.com To Find Fiji Resorts

As mentioned in my previous posts, I use Booking.com frequently when we travel! I go this route whenever I am not tied to a loyalty program where I want to earn and use rewards.

This search shows resorts in Fiji, and you can quickly search it by date and price to see that we can absolutely find accommodation within our budget for Spring Break! For the purpose of this post, I will make it easy and compare rates on Booking.com. You can also often book direct with the resort for slightly lower rates and added perks, especially when signing up for a free loyalty account.

For this sample trip, you only need your accommodations for 5 nights, as travelers will cross the International Date Line and arrive early in the day on the 24th. The flight back to Los Angeles leaves in the evening on the 29th, so we end up with 5 hotel nights. Click here to view the Booking.com options for those dates.

Later in this post, I share my recommendations for staying longer and how to break up your trip.

Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Fiji

One of the budget-friendly resorts in Fiji is the Shangri-La Yanuca Island, where I stayed for two nights. I like this place because breakfast is included in the rate, and kids under 12 eat free with a paying adult. The remaining food and drinks were priced much lower than I expected.

Some of the highlights for kids include:

  • inflatable water park
  • great snorkeling
  • fun family pool
  • horseback riding
  • Marine Education Centre

Although this beloved Coral Coast resort is a bit outdated, it was very clean. The bed was the most comfortable one I slept on of the three resorts I stayed at! What it lacks in updates, it makes up for in hospitality, making it a great option for your Fiji family vacation.

Being the largest island resort, taking up all of Yanuca Island, it is nice and spread out and even includes a golf course. It never felt busy, even though it was full. I think it’s a place that would be a great option for my family on future family trips to Fiji! Many visitors echo that sentimentโ€”almost half of their guests are return guests.

For our exact dates, a two-adult-and-two-kids stay in an Ocean Deluxe King Room with a Sleeper Sofa costs $1211.

This leaves $160 for food, which is somewhat doable since breakfast is included and kids eat free. Depending on how much you eat and drink, you may be over. But it’s close enough.

So, in this example, yes, your family of four can plan a weeklong (five-night) family trip to Fiji for around $5000!

OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort

One of the other family-friendly resorts I stayed at, the OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort, had similar rates.  Furthermore, it recently underwent a large renovation, so the rooms are freshly updated. They also added a waterslide for 2024 and have many daily kid’s activities. It has a kids club for your little ones and is a popular place for Australian and New Zealand residents to take family holidays.

This would be a great place to stay in Fiji with teenagers!   For an added fee, they have a paintball course, archery, driving range, and many more fun activities.

The OUTRIGGER Fiji is located further from Nadi but close to Sigatoka, so it’s a great location if you want to explore the nearby rivers, caves, and sand dunes!  This is a plus because my family would enjoy doing these activities together.  If you stay only at an outer island resort, you can often miss these natural treasures!

It would be hard to stay here and pay less than $5000 simply because you are paying for food for all three meals, but it wouldn’t cost much more at all.  In fact, a current promo allows kids 12 and under to eat free at the Outrigger Fiji when booking direct with the resort (terms here). They also really let you customize your stay, offering all-inclusive dining plans, butler service, activity passes, etc, so that you only pay for exactly what you want.

So, for this example, I will say your family of four can plan a weeklong (five-night) family trip to Fiji and stay at the OUTRIGGER Fiji beach resort for close to $5000!  This is in a basic room, but you can always pay more for a family bure, they are beautiful.

Other Hotel Options

I never like to endorse hotels without personally staying at them, but several other options are slightly cheaper. For this reason, you absolutly can get your family to Fiji for $5000, and during Spring Break, too!

When browsing Fiji accommodations on Booking.com, read the reviews and overall ratings before making a decision. I would definitely look for a resort-like experience and choose somewhere on the water.

What Does A $7500 Family Trip To Fiji Look Like?

If you have an extra $2500, you can plan a much better trip!  This could mean extending your trip, adding on exciting day trips, and even splurging for more upscale accommodations.

Longer Stay in Fiji

With a higher budget, I would extend my stay by two or three days. The airfare costs will likely remain the same. You may have to take the kids out of school for a couple of days. However, having more time would allow you to split your stay between two (or three) resorts and see more of Fiji.

In most cases, it would consist of three or four nights on the main island, three or four nights on an outlying island, and/or one night at a hotel near the airport and Port Denarau, either on the first or last night of your trip.

Fiji Island Resorts

The Mamanuca Islands nearby offer a convenient option for your family vacation.  I recommend adding on a few days at Castaway Island!  I really enjoyed my time here, and it truly embraced the magic of a tropical island in the South Pacific that one would expect.  And yes, they also have a kids club.

Enjoying the beach on a family trip To Fiji

For around $500 USD per night (rates vary) over our March dates, you can stay in a private bure at Castaway Island Fiji family resort with one King bed and two Twin beds. This is one place where it wouldn’t cost more for us with our teens as there are three beds, and we would get one room vs two.

Click here to see my Instagram tour of the one I stayed in! Note that the oceanfront bures will run approximately $200 more per night than the ones set back behind them.

Added Outings in Fiji

With the extra money, plan some fun family activities while in Fiji. Depending on where you stay, this could be a South Sea Island day trip, river tubing, an authentic Fijian village experience, and so much more.  This area is known for its great scuba diving, and with any quick road trip, you will find adventure!

Higher End Fiji Resorts

Looking at the map above, you can see that you can stay at more upscale Fiji family resorts, such as InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, for only $200- $300 more per night. Breakfast is also included in the rate, and it’s a popular Fiji family resort. I had a chance to tour this property, and it is beautiful!

Being part of the IHG portfolio, it’s a great place to stay if you want to earn points and is one of the most upscale family friendly resorts in Fiji.  It seems as if it’s hard to find good, spacious, regular family rooms at resorts in Fiji. The InterContinental had some great family options and more rooms with two beds than the others. Some even had private plunge pools and outdoor tubs as you see below!

All in all, that extra $2500 could get you a very well-rounded trip to Fiji, making a family trip to Fiji under $7500 very easy to find!

What Does A $10,000 Family Trip To Fiji Look Like?

The sky is the limit in Fiji!

If you have a larger family travel budget, you can opt to stay in beachfront bures (bungalows) at various resorts, including the best family resorts Fiji offers.  You can opt for a Club Suite at the InterContinental Fiji Gold Resort & Spa. Enjoy more premium meals, full-time nanny service, spa treatments, and more.  You can also hire a private guide and more upscale transfers. You can even arrange a helicopter transfer between the mainland and the outer island resorts.

Or, if your schedule allows, you can take a longer family vacation to Fiji and explore the areas further away from the airport. Fiji is made up of over 300 islands, over one hundred of which are inhabited and waiting for you to come and explore them!

Plan Your Family Trip To Fiji

In this travel blog post, my goal was to determine whether I could take my family to Fiji for $5000.   Since Abby and Jake are teenagers, I will need around $6500 for a base-level trip with them.  However, with proper planning and flexibility, a family of four with children under 12 can very much plan a family trip to Fiji for around $5000.

Your money goes a long way in Fiji, so I would plan to spend a little bit more to get exactly what you want! How much is an average trip to Fiji?    If I had to guess, the average American family of four spends around $7500 for a weeklong trip.

I also want to point out that the resorts in this post are all nearest to the Nadi airport on or near Viti Levu, but if you have more time and money, head over to Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Yasawa, or other popular island destinations in Fiji!
