Since its inception in 1996, the Box Tops for Education program has given over $913 million back to America’s schools. Most school organizations, like the PTO, run the program, and the money they get from the program is a pretty solid line in the budget. But collecting, counting, and turning box tops in can be tedious. A few years ago several of us moms gathered at a friend’s house (she was the chairperson of the Box Tops Program at our school), and we sorted through thousands of tops at the end of the year. Parents held onto them for a long time as they collected them throughout the year. The teachers kept a bucket so there would be a big Box Tops drive completed with prizes for the top collectors. After the drive, we found ourselves literally surrounded by them. They each had a value of 10 cents, and so we could not let any go to waste. It took many hours of sorting, but after we discarded the expired and the torn ones, we were able to submit them and give hundreds of dollars back to our school. And of course, it was worth it. But, times are a-changin’ my friends! Box Tops are going digital!
Yep, the program we know and love is going digital, and I had a chance to try it out today. It is so easy! Seriously, you shop, scan your receipt into the app, and you are done! I spent $40 today at Walmart and after I scanned my receipt it gave $2.20 back to the school. You can track it all in the app. And the best part is from now until September 8th, you can earn DOUBLE BOX TOPS exclusively at Walmart! With an offer like that, it adds up so fast!
How to use the new Box Tops For Education Program
- Download the app. You can find it in the app store or get more information here. You create an account and you choose your school.
- Shop! Buy your family’s favorite products. You will be surprised at how many are eligible. Access the full list here. And keep in mind that the app also offers exclusive bonus offers. For example, because I bought three boxes of our favorite General Mills cereals I received an extra dollar back! And don’t forget about the exclusive double box tops that Walmart is offering!
- Open the app and scan your receipt within 14 days.
And that is it! with it being this easy there is no reason not to participate and I would invite grandparents or your friends without school-age children to take part too! We always had a lot of Box Tops when my kids were younger. Going digital seems like it will make it easier, but I know that it will also make things tougher for some families to contribute. I always try to donate General Mills cereal to our local food bank, because I know that kids really feel important when they bring in the Box Tops.
Well that is an improvement. I will check this out. I like things that give back and if they go digital to save me time and effort then that is gold in my opinion. Great idea.
I love Box Tops for Education, but I am not sure about it going digital. For some moms, it’s easier to remember when you see the boxtop on the product. I’m afraid I’ll forget to scan my receipt within the two weeks.
They still have the box top logo on them. You just don’t have to clip it out so hopefully that helps!
When I was a school principal, I collected the heck out of these. We got so much great stuff. I had a PTO mom who loved to organize it all and I let her!

I love the Box Tops for Education program but collecting the small pieces was always a pain to keep up with them. I’m excited that they are now available in digital format and will be submitting any that I get to the school as soon as I get them now.
THis sounds so much more convenient than the old method. I love that it’s going digital. I need to download the app!

Not much fo a collector for Boxtops but I love that they have already helped by donating millions back to America’s schools. Going digital is also very helpful.
Our school earns a lot of money every year from Box Tops. We are hoping to have a new set up and incentives program ready for the new year.
I do remember the clipping of box tops. This is a huge leap forward. Much easier now to donate to schools across America. Didn’t know about the change. Thanks for the update 🙂
