So, I have mentioned (especially on my Instagram) that Jake is scheming up his own company called “Jake’s Nature”.ย He plans to to sell trees just like Johnny Appleseed as well as Venus Fly Trap (lol) and I talked him into potting succulents too.ย The only thing is that we are in the desert and I wasn’t sure just how the tree growing thing would work out.
This morning I sound out about a local peach orchard just 2.5 miles from our house.ย It is owned and operated by a local woman and has been in her family for a long time.ย When I told the kids we were going they were excited.ย But there was one catch.ย I asked them to brainstorm some questions to ask her that might help them grow their fruit trees.ย They came up with some great ones.
How old are these trees?
What are the average number of peaches that each tree makes a year?
How often do you have to water them?
How many years does it take before a tree creates its first piece of fruit?
and more.
She answered those so kindly and told them even more about her drip irrigation and the critters that try to eat her peaches.ย We feel so lucky to have heard about McDonald Peach Orchard.ย What a hidden gem!
I just set them down to watch James and the Giant Peach this afternoon.ย I have the most vivid memories of my first time reading that book.ย I was in 3rd grade and spent a whole weekend reading it cover to cover!
โWell, maybe it started that way. As a dream, but doesnโt everything. Those buildings. These lights. This whole city. Somebody had to dream about it first. And maybe that is what I did. I dreamed about coming here, but then I did it.โย ย โย Roald Dahl,ย James and the Giant Peach
