We have lived back in Saint Louis for over a year now and FINALLY got the kids over to The Magic House. What a fun place! And talk about a legacy… the building is actually an old Victorian Mansion that was converted to a museum in the last 1970s. Even the attic smells like old house and they have a secret room of old victorian dress up garb. They show an old sealed off staircase and the stairwells are lined in nostalgia. It seems to amazing that what once was home for an American family is now being enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of kids year after year.
The house was originally built in 1901 as a private home for the George Lane Edwards family. Mr. Edwards was a managing partner in his family’s brokerage firm, A.G. Edwards & Sons, as well as the first president of the St. Louis Stock Exchange and a director of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. By the time that two St. Louis women, Jody Newman and Barbie Freund, decided to convert it to a musuem… it was simply sitting vacant. I wish I had more time to read about the family while I was there but the kids were way too busy having fun!
Totally worth a visit!
