The First Empty Nest

So, I would love to think out loud today.  And maybe open up a conversation with you guys about something that we are all probably going through or about to go through.

I want to talk about what us Stay At Home Moms do when our youngest start grade school.  Our first little twinge of the Empty Next. It’s crazy to thing that I only have two years left with a little at home all day.  I am shocking 5/7ths of the way done with that part of life.  I know friends who feel the same sense of awkward purpose right now and are trying to figure it out for themselves too.

What do we do now?

This is in no means to jab at working moms.  And it’s not to be focused on lazy moms vs active moms, haves or have nots, just pure non judgemental wondering.

To be 100% honest.  I don’t want to get a job.  The thought of going back to career life is just not appealing.  But I am bored sometimes.  I feel like I would need some sense of fulfillment.  I can’t just spent the next 13 years of school biding my time from 8:30 – 3:00 everyday.  But I like greeting them when they get home and putting Abby on the bus. I like having Summers with the kids.  I like having time to go to the gym and out for lunch.   Is that selfish?

And I really feel like this is a tough conversation that Matt and I need to have too.  I think this is one of those pivotal points in a marriage when non being on the same page can really cause serious long term resentment issues.

So, what do we do?  What is your plan?  If you have already gotten past this then what worked for you?

Let’s chat!

Do we?

Volunteer in the community?

Work in the classrooms?

Learn photography?

Go back to school?

Jumpstart or resart our career?

Finally just relax and enjoy alone time?

Work part time?

Start cooking more?

Do direct sales?

Pick up a new hobby?

Start a new business?

Drink coffee with friends then shop each day?

Play online all day?

Work on getting fit?

Work from home?

Explore?

Take up sewing?

Start a crafting shop?

Dabble in Etsy?

Seriously you guys… Thinking about which direction to point my life once Jake starts school stresses me out.  We move around every couple years so I think that with Matt’s job becoming involved in the community and volunteering in school would be a great route.  But I also like to win the bread.  Do I really ramp up my blog?  Dive in head fist to this new one.

I want to be happy.  I really want to set a good example for my kids about hard work and ones role in a family.

It’s all about what works for your own family.  And for your own self.

What are you going to do?

(Comments here or on this Facebook post are welcome!)

And whatever you do.  I bet your families loves you just the same.

  1. I have 5 kids in school and one child left at home. He is 2 so only a few more years and he will be gone as well. I feel the same way as you do, I do not want to work! With this many kids though we will probably need the extra money. I think I will probably work part time, I still want to be able to pick them up from school or go to class parties etc etc. Im already going a bit crazy just having one at home and I find im taking a few too many naps these days. 😉

  2. I have the same problem too. I was thinking about cooking cources somewhere in Italy or France, but still don’t want to leave my 5 year old daughter even for 2-3 weeks. I am thinking more about how to educate myself more. What I am interested in? And something that will not take too much time. I like idea about my own small business.
So it’s hard to think and decide.
Or maybe to have one more sweet child?????
