A Yellow Submarine.

So, as you guys may or may not have seen on Instagram Abby took a fall a week and a half ago and had to get some stitches above her eye. ย We had a scary drive to the hospital and a load of anxiety before the stitches. ย Abby stayed pretty calm and in the midst of crisis found comfort in The Beatles. ย And I wouldn’t expect anything less from her.

Sometime awhile back when brushing knots out of her hair I started singing:

“We all live in a yellow submarine. Yellow submarine. ย Yellow submarine. ย We all live in a yellow submarine. Yellow submarine. ย Yellow submarine.”

I never sang the rest of the song and quite frankly I don’t think I even know it off the top of my head. ย Over time I would distract her with it really quick when I had to get a big tangle and it took her mind off things.

So, flash forward to the crazy ride to the ER. ย As I navigated (thought the ghetto I might add) she sat in the back. ย Holding pressure on her eye chanting ‘we all live in a yellow submarine’ over and over again. ย It kind of calmed me down to hear her too! And when it was time for the stitches she sang it again and had me chime in.

Last Monday we had the stitches out. ย I couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear when in a panic on the table she said ‘sing the song mom’. ย So, I sang. ย The doctor and nurse chimed in. ย Abby belted it out. ย We got a round of applause when the exam room opened. ย So, I guess we have a ‘thing’ now!

How about you? ย Do you have a special coping mechanism with your child(ren)? ย Whether it’s odd or mainstream, it sure is something special to share.

I think it’s time that I learned the rest of the song.

    1. Thank you Melissa! It’s these little things that made me feel like a real mom. And that I must be doing something right… I mean, she likes the Beatles and is 5 so that is already a win! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. Not as cool as The Beatles, but my 4yr old son requests “Royals” by Lorde (sung soft and slow) to help him calm down, or on sleepless nights. I think it’s the slow rhythmic snapping that does the trick.

  2. This brought tears to my eyes (could be pregnancy hormones too!)… I have a song with my little girl too… I don’t even know the name, and only know a few lines, but it has always been our calming ‘thing’. Even when she was a baby, and sick, I used to rock back and forth in the shower, holding her and singing our song, over and over again. So cool that you guys will always have this song. Now you have to get one for Jake too ๐Ÿ™‚
