A Sintra day trip from Lisbon is one of the most popular day trips in Portugal! In less than an hour, you can go from Lisbonās historic neighborhoods to misty hills filled with colorful palaces, ancient stone walls, and sweeping views that feel completely different from the city.
However, a day trip to Sintra from Lisbon requires more planning than most travelers expect. In fact, itās easy just to say, āIāll take the train and play it by ear.ā But, in reality, between timed tickets, transportation logistics, and crowds, this is one destination where having a plan really matters.
This guide outlines how to plan a Sintra day trip from Lisbon. It includes what to prioritize and how to realistically visit Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle in one day without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
How do I know? Well, I did this exact Lisbon day trip last year on a solo trip. And this summer, our family will spend a few weeks in Portugal and do it again. That said, for our upcoming European summer trip, we will be staying in Cascais for a few days and actually taking our Sintra Day trip from there, using rideshare to get there and back.

A Sintra Day Trip From Lisbon
Sintra is a historic town located just outside Lisbon, set in the forested hills of the Sintra Mountains. Its cooler climate and elevated position made it a longtime retreat for Portuguese royalty. This explains why so many palaces and castles are concentrated in such a small area.
Because of its proximity, Sintra is an ideal day trip from Lisbon. You can experience a completely different landscape and atmosphere without changing hotels, making a Sintra day trip from Lisbon both practical and rewarding.
I actually enjoyed Sintra so much that I wish I had an overnight there to really savor my time strolling around.

A Brief History of Sintra, Portugal
Long before it became a popular day trip from Lisbon, Sintra was valued for its strategic location and natural defenses. The Romans occupied Sintra and were later replaced by the Moors, who built fortifications along the ridgeline to control access to the region.
After the Christian reconquest, Sintra evolved into a retreat for Portuguese nobility and royalty. During the 18th and 19th centuries, extravagant estates and palaces were built throughout the hills, blending architecture with the surrounding landscape.
This unique combination of history, nature, and design is why Sintra is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and why most tourists do a Sintra day trip from Lisbon when visiting Portugal.

How To Get to Sintra From Lisbon
The most common way to start a Sintra day trip from Lisbon is by train. Trains from Rossio Station run frequently, are inexpensive, and take about 40 minutes. Once you arrive in Sintra town, youāll need additional transportation to reach hilltop attractions like Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle.
Another option that worked very well for me is simply using Uber. I took an Uber directly from my hotel (Hyatt Regency Lisboa) in Lisbon, and the ride was shorter and surprisingly affordable. While rideshares usually canāt take you all the way to palace entrances, they can drop you close enough to use the shuttle then or walk the rest of the way up.

Should You Take the Train or Uber From Lisbon to Sintra?
In my opinion, a Sintra day trip from Lisbon by train is best if you are located near the Rossio train station, which is where you board the Lisbon to Sintra train. If you are trying to beat the crowds to Pena Palace or secure a specific timed entry slot, you may not want to spend a lot of time taking transfers, which are often required to reach the main train station. Plus, upon arrival in Sintra, you will need to take a bus or taxi/rideshare up the hill to the historical sites.
I was staying outside Old Town Lisbon, so taking the train would have taken me twice as long, so I took an Uber that took 45 minutes and cost 25 euros. And that is as a solo traveler. If you are visiting Lisbon with your family, an Uber may make more sense both logistically and financially.
So, for travelers who value convenience, Uber can be a great way to simplify your Sintra day trip from Lisbon. My trip back from Sintra to the hotel took 35 minutes and cost 25 euros. I found ridesharing in Portugal to be much less expensive than in most European countries we have visited.
Driving to Sintra yourself is not recommended due to parking limitations and traffic restrictions.
How Much Time Do You Need for a Sintra Day Trip From Lisbon?
To make the most of a Sintra day trip from Lisbon, plan to spend most of the day there. A realistic schedule includes arriving early, visiting one or two major sites, allowing time for transportation between stops, and returning to Lisbon in the early evening. Do not make dinner reservations in Lisbon or commit to that evening.
Trying to squeeze Sintra into a half-day often results in rushed visits and missed ticket windows, especially at Pena Palace. Plus, I really enjoyed taking my time and walking the trail down from the Moorish Castle into Sintra. Once in town, I strolled the old town a bit before stopping at a charming wine bar for a snack and drink. As I was leaving, the energy was growing more lively, with musicians performing across the street and crowds gathering.

Seeing Pena Palace on a Sintra Day Trip From Lisbon
Pena Palace is the most iconic stop on a Sintra day trip from Lisbon ā and also the most crowded. Tickets are timed, sell out in advance, and require careful planning. Entry time refers to palace access, not arrival at the park gates, so transportation time up the hill needs to be factored in. This could be a shuttle, taxi/rideshare, or a tuk tuk.
Because of this, Pena Palace usually determines the pacing of your entire Sintra day trip from Lisbon. Booking the earliest possible ticket and building the rest of the day around it makes the experience far more manageable.
For full details on tickets, timing, and how to avoid the crowds, see my complete Pena Palace guide.

The Moorish Castle on a Sintra Day Trip From Lisbon
Just a short walk from Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle offers a much calmer experience. Instead of interiors, this site focuses on outdoor walking paths, historic stone walls, and panoramic views over Sintra and toward the Atlantic.
There is a single entrance ticket and no timed entry, making it far more flexible for a Sintra day trip from Lisbon. Itās an ideal second stop, especially if you want something less hectic after visiting Pena Palace.

Other Things To See on a Sintra Day Trip From Lisbon
If you have extra time after visiting Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle, there are a few additional sites worth considering. Keep in mind that trying to see everything in one day can feel rushed, so itās best to choose one additional stop at most, rather than adding multiple palaces.
Quinta da Regaleira is one of the most popular additions to a Sintra day trip from Lisbon. Known for its gardens, towers, and the famous Initiation Well, this site is more about exploring outdoor spaces than palace interiors. It does get busy, but many visitors enjoy it as a contrast to Pena Palace.
The National Palace of Sintra, located right in the town center, is another option if you prefer something more accessible. Its distinctive twin chimneys make it easy to spot, and itās a good choice if you want to avoid another uphill journey.
If youāre feeling palace fatigue, simply spending time walking through Sintra town can be a nice way to slow things down. CafĆ©s, small shops, and shaded streets offer a break from major attractions and help balance out a busy Sintra day trip from Lisbon.
The old town of Sintra features charming alleyways, many souvenir shops, cafes, and beautiful corners to explore.

Suggested Sintra Day Trip From Lisbon Itinerary
For most travelers, this order works best:
1. Arrive in Sintra early via Uber.
2. Visit Pena Palace first, based on your timed ticket.
3. Head to the Moorish Castle and explore at your leisure.
4. Take the trail down to Sintra if you are up for it and have no mobility issues.
5. Choose one additional stop or explore Sintra town. Stop by a cafe to eat and simply enjoy the sights and sounds.
6. Return to Lisbon via train or Uber in the evening.
This flow minimizes backtracking and keeps your Sintra day trip from Lisbon feeling organized rather than chaotic. At the same time, it gives you a lot of flexibility once you finish your visit to Pena Palace. However, this all hinges on your purchasing Pena Palace timed-entry tickets as early as possible. Or, just skip the palace interior.

Taking a Guided Sintra Day Tour from Lisbon
If you want to eliminate all logistics on your end, you can book a guided tour of Sintra that departs from Lisbon. The benefits of doing this are that you can simply show up and follow someone around. For me, the negatives would be that you are stuck to one schedule and it doesn’t allow you to explore at your own pace.
If you want to book one of the guided Sintra day tours from Lisbon, here are some great options! Many also combine this day trip with Cascais or other popular day trips from Lisbon.
Is One Day Enough for a Sintra Day Trip From Lisbon?
One day is enough for a Sintra day trip from Lisbon if you focus on just a few highlights. Trying to visit too many palaces in one day often leads to fatigue and frustration. Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle together provide a balanced mix of history, views, and atmosphere.
Staying overnight allows for a slower pace, but itās not necessary for a meaningful Sintra day trip from Lisbon. It does add the extra logistics of luggage and hotel check-ins to your day. That said, if you are flying out of Lisbon, it may be worthwhile to spend your last night or two in Sintra for a change of pace.
Helpful Travel Tips for a Smooth Sintra Day Trip From Lisbon
Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring layers, and carry water. The weather can change quickly in the hills, and walking routes include stairs and uneven paths. Eat a full breakfast before heading to Sintra, as outside food and drink are not permitted at Pena Palace.
Looking at maps and planning our travel and transportation in advance helps ensure we arenāt running behind on the day of our trip. Figure out exactly how you will be getting from Lisbon to Sintra at least the night before.
Additionally, avoiding midday entry times at Pena Palace will significantly improve your Sintra day trip from Lisbon if you canāt get a morning slot. I would actually consider choosing one later in the day and doing the itinerary somewhat in reverse. Alternatively, simply enjoy the exteriors of Pena Palace with the basic entry ticket and skip the timed-entry inside the palace.
