When I started planning our recent family trip to the Italian Riviera, one of the first questions I had was how many days we needed in Cinque Terre. This famous stretch of coastline is made up of five colorful villages perched above the Ligurian Sea in Northern Italy, and every photo makes it look like somewhere you’ll want to slow down and explore.

This was part of an almost three-week European train trip, starting in Antibes, France, and ending at the Hyatt Centric Murano near Venice, Italy. We ended up spending four nights in Cinque Terre right in the middle of this extended vacation (June 1-5). And, I’m really glad we didn’t try to rush this stop. Cinque Terre is incredible!

Having several days allowed us to explore each village. We were also able to relax and truly enjoy Vernazza, where we stayed, in the mornings and during events, when the Cinque Terre day-trip crowds started to thin out.

If you’re trying to decide how long to spend in Cinque Terre, here’s what I learned from our visit and what most travelers should realistically plan for.

How Many Days Do You Need in Cinque Terre?

For most travelers, two to three days in Cinque Terre is the sweet spot. This gives you enough time to visit all five villages, enjoy some of the famous coastal hiking trails, and actually take some time to relax during your trip to Italy! Which seems obvious, but some people try to do way too much, and it takes away some of the magic.

The five villages that make up Cinque Terre, which literally means “five lands” or “five towns,” are connected by a quick regional train. This makes it very easy to get between them. However, each town has its own personality, viewpoints, and restaurants, so having a couple of days lets you explore without feeling super rushed.

Spending the night also lets you experience the villages in the early morning and evening, which are often the most peaceful and beautiful times of day.

As I mentioned above, we stayed four nights in Vernazza.  It didn’t feel like too much time for my family.  We spent some time visiting other towns, but also took a nice boat trip from the marina right outside our Vernazza rental.  And, I had time to catch up on laundry, hanging it to dry in the fresh salt air next to the famous church bell tower. See this post, for a link to the rental we stayed in.

That said, I know many people are taking shorter trips and can only spend a couple of days in each place.  I get it! I like to see it all when I travel, too. Just don’t overdo it and try to move locations every day or two!

Can You Visit Cinque Terre in One Day?

It’s definitely possible to visit Cinque Terre in one day, and many travelers do Cinque Terre as a day trip from Florence, Milan, or other parts of northern Italy. But, I honestly do not recommend doing that unless you have no other choice.

Why?

The reality of a day trip is that travel time can take up much of your day, leaving only a few hours to explore.  Plus, if you visit during the summer or the shoulder seasons, these communities will be the busiest during the exact time you’ll be visiting.  When we stayed in Vernazza, the stark contrast between the streets at 8 am and 10 am was staggering!  During the summer, it quickly goes from quiet walks and passing smiles to shoulder-to-shoulder crowds.

Therefore, if you only have one day, I would recommend focusing on one or two of the Cinque Terre villages instead of trying to see all five. This is especially true during the summer when the trains are at capacity. Below is a view from the patio of our rental in Vernazza mid day!

Is Two Days Enough for Cinque Terre, Italy?

Two days is a great option if you’re adding Cinque Terre to a larger Italy itinerary.  In fact, it’s a great stop on a train trip along the Ligurian coast.  On our trip, we flew into Nice, France, and stayed a few days in Antibes before taking the train to Monaco, Camogli, Cinque Terre, and then on to Rome and Venice.

TIP: We love using TrainLine to purchase and organize our train tickets when traveling in Europe!

With two full days, you can visit each of the villages, enjoy some of the viewpoints, and even hike between a couple of towns. The train between villages runs frequently, so moving around is quick and easy.

This likely means staying three nights or arriving early on the first day.  However, many rentals can’t offer luggage storage.  So, this is something to consider when deciding whether to stay in an Airbnb vs a hotel.

Why I Was Glad We Spent Four Nights in Cinque Terre

We ended up spending four nights in Cinque Terre in early June, which gave us three full days to explore the area.

Instead of rushing through each village, we had time to wander through the streets, stop for long lunches overlooking the sea, and enjoy the scenery without constantly watching the clock. Having extra time also meant we could visit some villages in the early morning, before the biggest crowds arrived.

For our travel style, this slower pace made the experience much more enjoyable. Plus, it was in the middle of a longer trip, and that’s when I always bake in longer stays so we can recover a bit.  I did that again this past summer, spending four nights in Cassis, France.

And, make sure to stay in the Cinque Terre town that best fits your needs and travel style. Here is a little overview!

The Five Villages of Cinque Terre, Italy

Cinque Terre, Italy, is made up of five small villages connected by train, hiking trails, and seasonal boat routes. Each one has its own atmosphere and scenery, and part of the fun is discovering which one becomes your favorite.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso is the largest of the five villages and the only one with a true sandy beach. It’s a popular spot for swimming and relaxing by the water. This is my pick for where to stay with kids.

Vernazza

Vernazza is often considered the most picturesque village in Cinque Terre. The small harbor and colorful buildings make it one of the most photographed spots along the coast. We stayed here and really enjoyed it!

Corniglia

Corniglia sits high above the sea and is the only village that doesn’t sit directly on the water. Visitors reach the town by climbing a long staircase from the train station, but the views from the top are worth it.

Manarola

Manarola is famous for its pastel buildings stacked along the cliffs above the water. The walking paths overlooking the harbor offer some of the most iconic views in Cinque Terre.

Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is often the first village travelers see when arriving from La Spezia. The colorful houses cascade down toward the marina, creating one of the most recognizable views in the region.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Cinque Terre?

We visited Cinque Terre the first week of June, and it turned out to be a really nice time to go. The weather was warm enough to enjoy being outside.  It was crowded, but not quite as crowded as the rest of the summer months, since many European schools are not yet out.

We had to wait until the kids were out of school for this trip. And, for the last several years, we have used this window for our annual European summer vacation.  We leave around Memorial Day weekend and stay for two to three weeks. I think it’s a nice little sweet spot! But, if you have more flexibility, then I would go in May or September for slightly fewer crowds and lower prices.

Spring and early summer are great for hiking and sightseeing, while September and early October also offer beautiful weather with slightly smaller crowds.
