When most travelers plan a trip to Barcelona, they focus on the city itself. But one of the easiest and most enjoyable excursions along the Catalan coast is a day trip to Sitges from Barcelona!
We actually did things a little differently on our recent trip to Spain. Instead of just visiting Sitges from Barcelona, we stayed in Sitges for the first couple of days. Then our family took the train to Barcelona for the next few nights. That turned out to be a fantastic way to experience this charming Spanish seaside town before diving into the city. It was a great place to kick that jet lag, and we loved Sitges!

Taking a Day Trip to Sitges from Barcelona
Sitges, Spain, is known for its beautiful beaches, whitewashed old town streets, lively waterfront promenade, and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. And the best part is how easy it is to reach from Barcelona by train. Prior to our trip, I spent quite a bit of time deciding which Spanish coastal town to pair with our visit to Barcelona. We chose Sitges because it was the easiest option, and it was a great choice!
Of course, I highly recommend you spend a couple of nights in Sitges before visiting Barcelona, as we did.  But even if you only have one day to visit, you should still go on a day trip to Sitges! So, if you’re ready to add Sitges, Spain to your itinerary, here’s exactly how to plan a fun and easy day trip from Barcelona.

Why Sitges Is the Perfect Day Trip from Barcelona
Sitges sits just about 35 minutes south of Barcelona along the Mediterranean coast, making it one of the easiest coastal escapes from the city. And, it’s very easy to get to by train!
The town of Sitges has a completely different feel from Barcelona. Instead of busy city streets and famous landmarks, Sitges offers beach views, small plazas, historic streets, and a laid-back seaside atmosphere. It’s a great place to take a coastal boat cruise, enjoy great Spanish tapas, or just stroll along the popular coastal path.
Even though we stayed there for a couple of days before heading into Barcelona, it’s very easy to experience the highlights of Sitges in a single day. Between the beaches, the beautiful old town, and the lively promenade, there’s plenty to see without feeling rushed.

Barcelona to Sitges Train: How to Get to Sitges from Barcelona
Most travelers reach Sitges by train from Barcelona, and the route is one of the easiest coastal trips in Spain.
Regional trains run frequently between Barcelona and Sitges throughout the day, and the journey usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the train and your departure point. The route follows the coastline for part of the trip, making it a surprisingly scenic ride.
Most travelers depart from Barcelona Sants or Passeig de GrĂ cia stations and arrive directly in Sitges. The Sitges train station is located at the northern end of the Old Town, close to shops and restaurants. Once you arrive, the downhill walk from the train station to the beach only takes about 10 minutes.
Because the train is so convenient, Sitges is one of the easiest day trips to add to a Barcelona itinerary. And here are a few first-hand travel tips to make your day trip to Sitges as easy as possible.
How much does the train from Barcelona to Sitges cost? It’s only around €3–€5 per person!

Barcelona to Sitges Train Tips
Since the train is by far the easiest way to get to Sitges from Barcelona, most visitors use this route for a quick day trip to the coast. Honestly, taking the train from Barcelona to Sitges is very straightforward, but there are a few helpful things to know before you go!
Trains run frequently throughout the day, usually every 10 to 30 minutes, so you generally don’t need to worry about booking tickets far in advance. Most travelers simply purchase tickets at the station on the day of travel.
The R2 Sud line typically serves this route, connecting Barcelona Sants, Passeig de GrĂ cia, and several other stations directly to Sitges. The ride takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the train and which Barcelona train station to board from.
If you’re visiting Sitges during the summer or on a weekend, it’s a good idea to go earlier in the morning to avoid the busiest trains.  Sitges is a very popular summer destination, not only for tourists but also for locals in Barcelona looking to escape the city for a bit. Â
On the way home, I would recommend having dinner in Sitges before taking the train back to Barcelona. That way, you can avoid some of the after-work rush hour train crowds and daytrippers also returning to Barcelona.
And while I find the train system in Spain very easy to use, I know that some people may not feel as comfortable navigating public transportation overseas. So, you can always use rideshare or arrange a private car transfer to Sitges! Or, book a guided tour to Sitges from Barcelona that includes transportation
What to Do on a Day Trip to Sitges
Even though Sitges is a relatively small town, there’s plenty to see and do during a day visit. Most travelers spend their time exploring the beaches, wandering the old town streets, and enjoying the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere along the waterfront.
I have a great Sitges travel guide that lists 10 Fun & Easy Things to Do in Sitges, Spain, if you want to take a look. Otherwise, if you are there for just a day, you will likely want to spend your time enjoying the following activities in Sitges!
#1 Shop & Stroll Through Sitges Old Town
One of the best things to do in Sitges is simply to wander through the old town. Narrow streets lined with white buildings, colorful doors, and small cafés give the town a classic Mediterranean feel.
The area around the Church of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla is especially beautiful and offers some of the most iconic views in Sitges.
This area is full of small shops, local restaurants, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean. You could easily spend a couple of hours wandering through the narrow streets and popping in and out of shops and cafes.
Maybe even consider booking a photo session while in Sitges!

#2 Relax on the Sitges Beaches
Sitges is famous for its beaches, many of which are located right in town. Several sandy beaches line the waterfront promenade, making it easy to go for a swim or simply relax by the water. If you are visiting Sitges during the summer, these beaches can get busy. But, we found them to be fun and lively!
Even if you’re only visiting for a few hours, walking along the beach promenade is one of the highlights of the town. The views along the coastline are beautiful, and there are plenty of places to stop for drinks or lunch near the water. There are even a couple of restaurants on the sand, right off the promenade. These are great options for lunch or drinks!

#3 Walk the Sitges Waterfront Promenade
The palm-lined promenade, called Passeig Maritim, that runs along the Sitges coastline, is one of the most pleasant places to walk in town. It’s a great way to see a lot, get some steps in, and do some people-watching! In the summer, the pathways are bustling with people enjoying the sunshine and open air. In the winter, it’s quieter, but still a great way to enjoy the seaside.
This scenic path connects several of the popular Sitges beaches and offers beautiful views of the Mediterranean. Along the way, you’ll find restaurants, cafés, and plenty of spots to stop for a drink with a sea view.
#4 Take a Boat Ride Along the Sitges Coast
One of the most fun experiences we had in Sitges was taking a boat ride along the coastline. Â Seeing the town from the water gave us a completely different perspective of the beaches and cliffs along the Catalan coast.

How Much Time Do You Need in Sitges?
Most travelers find that one day is enough time to experience the highlights of Sitges. Â Unlike places like Cinque Terre, Italy, which I recommend spending at least 2 days, Sitges is a very doable day trip from Barcelona.
Because the town of Sitges, Spain, is compact and easy to walk, you can visit the beaches, explore the old town, and enjoy lunch by the sea all within a few hours on your day trip to Sitges. Many visitors arrive in the morning and head back to Barcelona in the late afternoon or evening.
That said, if your itinerary allows it, spending a night or two in Sitges can be a wonderful experience. As I mentioned above, our family of four stayed there for a couple of days before heading into Barcelona. We loved having time to enjoy the beaches and relaxed atmosphere!

Best Time to Visit Sitges, Spain
Sitges is a wonderful destination year-round, but the experience can vary depending on when you visit.
Spring and early summer are especially nice times to explore the town. The weather is warm enough for walking along the waterfront and enjoying outdoor cafés, but the crowds are usually smaller than during the peak summer season.
We visited in early summer (last week in May) and loved the atmosphere along the beaches and promenade. The weather was beautiful, and it was easy to spend time exploring the old town without feeling rushed.
July and August bring the warmest weather and the liveliest beach scene, though these months also attract the most visitors. If you’re planning a day trip from Barcelona during this time, arriving early in the morning can make the experience much more enjoyable.
Fall is another great option for a day trip to Sitges, as the Mediterranean weather often stays warm well into September and October. Â And, honestly, I think September is one of the best times to travel anywhere. Â The weather in most places is still temperate, and crowds have lessened as kids return to school.
