This summer, our family took a bucket-list trip to Europe for three weeks, visiting the French and Italian coasts, Venice, and Rome. We absolutely loved our time in Rome and fell in love with the culture, food, and history of this magical city. There is a lot to see in Rome, and the city is filled with so many amazing ruins, churches, and historic places that it’s hard to see it all during one vacation. That’s why I wanted to share with you a great way to maximize your sightseeing time – by taking a golf cart tour. Rome golf cart tours are a fun and low-stress way for the entire family to explore the Eternal City.

Why Take A Rome Golf Cart Tour?
There are a lot of reasons why taking a Rome golf cart tour might be a good fit for your group. I’ll go over a few reasons here:
#1 You Can Cover Ground Quickly
A Rome golf cart tour is a fantastic way to cover a lot of ground in a few hours and see several iconic tourist attractions in one day. These tours allow your group to get the “lay of the land” around busy places like the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain without having to navigate the often heavy crowds. It’s the perfect way to narrow down the areas you want to go back to later and see in more detail.
#2 Professional Tour Guide and Intimate Feel
During your tour, an expert guide will narrate the tour and teach your group about fascinating details of the city’s world-famous landmarks, buildings, ruins, and ancient history.
The small-group atmosphere of a tour creates a more intimate experience, allowing you to focus on the sights without the anxiety of sticking with a group. It’s a nice change from having to deal with large group tours that are often hurried, impersonal, and sometimes difficult to hear or understand!
#3 Easy For The Mobility-Impaired Traveler
A golf cart tour of Rome is great for travelers who have some sort of mobility impairment or for older adults who don’t move like they used to. Traveling by golf cart means you won’t have to walk long distances or deal with hills, steps, or stairwells. Rome is a big place, and tourist destinations are sometimes located miles apart. Having fast, reliable transport between sights makes the experience much more enjoyable.
NOTE: If you require a wheelchair, be sure to read the tour description carefully. Different tours have different restrictions. Some allow wheelchairs, and some don’t. Some tours only allow folding wheelchairs.
#4 Great For Families With Kids
These tours are perfect for families with children. We all know how hard it is to navigate around busy cities when you’re pushing a stroller or trying to herd young kids safely in the right direction. Additionally, golf cart tours of Rome allow your entire family to experience this amazing city without having to stress about way-finding, hot weather, long distances, and heavy backpacks.
As I’ll cover later in the Tip section, be sure to check the golf cart tour details to ensure you understand any age-related restrictions that may apply.
#5 You Can Select A Pick-Up And Drop-Off Tour Option (Most Private Tours)
There are different Rome golf cart tours for every family and budget. Many private tours automatically include or have an option you can select (for an added fee) to have the cart pick you up and drop you off at your rental or hotel. Your lodging must be within the area covered—usually within a couple of miles of historic downtown Rome. Having a pick-up and drop-off service eliminates the cost and headaches of booking your own Uber or taxi.
Picking The Right Rome Golf Cart Tour
There are so many Rome golf cart tours that come in many different shapes and sizes. The size of the golf cart, the destinations, the meeting place, the amenities, and the restrictions are important considerations for each tour. Let’s dig in!
Golf Cart Size and Types
The majority of these golf carts are electric-powered and seat 4-7 people, but they can be larger. Most are covered with open sides and padded seating, and some have limited storage space on the back. Standard and private tours include a single golf cart with only your group. Shared tours might consist of multiple standard-sized carts driven together in one tour, one large multi-seat cart, or multiple golf carts that are linked together like a train.
Standard vs. Private vs. Shared Tours
There are three main types of Rome golf cart tour options, so read the description section carefully.
Standard Golf Cart Tours
A standard Rome golf cart tour includes only your group, and the price is based per person by the number of passengers in your group. Standard tours usually require you to find your own transportation to the tour meeting point and back home after the tour is over. Also, these tours typically cover a pre-defined route, including multiple popular tourist destinations.
Private Golf Cart Tours
Private golf cart tours cost extra and usually include a pick-up and drop-off service where the tour guide transports you from and back to your hotel. This option is applicable only if your lodging is in close proximity to the tour route (check the tour description). Private tours sometimes allow for your group and the guide to “tailor-make” the route and destinations based on your group’s interests.
Shared Golf Cart Tours
Shared tours include more than just your group and often include oversized or multiple golf carts. They are usually the least expensive option, as you forfeit a more personalized experience in exchange for a better price. These tours take place along a pre-defined route to major tourist destinations.
What Will You See On These Golf Cart Tours In Rome?
A major difference you need to consider when choosing a golf cart in Rome is what destinations the tour will take you to see. There are a couple of different variations, and they will make a big impact on what you visit.
If you absolutely want to see a certain attraction, like the Pantheon for example, be sure to check whether or not the tour will drive by this location. Read the tour details carefully. On Get Your Guide, the “Experience” or “Highlights” sections should explain exactly what attractions you will see on the tour. Some tour pages also have a map showing what places you will visit.
Imperial City + Modern Sights
Many Rome golf cart tours will take you to those attractions within the footprint of ancient Rome (sometimes called the Imperial City) as well as modern sights within a couple-mile radius. These tour routes are all a little bit different, but most will include sights like the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, Circus Maximus, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona.
Appian Way and Catacomb Package
Some tours will take you southeast of the Imperial City along the ancient Roman road called the Appian Way. These tours typically package the Appian Way sights along with a walking tour of one of the Roman catacombs.
Many of these Rome golf cart tours go to some variation of the following locations: the Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Baths of Caracalla, Appian Way, Roman catacombs and Christian burial sites, Aurelian Walls, and the Pyramid of Caius Cestius. Matt and Abby went on a catacomb tour while we were in Rome, and they absolutely loved it!
Night Golf Cart Tours Of Rome
There are also tour options to take a night golf cart tour of Rome. These tours again take you to the places like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and other areas at night when they are gorgeously lit up. It’s a magical way to experience these iconic landmarks and would be the perfect romantic evening for couples.
Rome night golf cart tours typically last about 2.5 hours and start at 7 p.m. through 10 p.m., so be sure to check the start time before you buy.
Rome Golf Cart Tours Amenities And Other Considerations
Finding the best Rome golf cart tours also includes reviewing the different amenities that might be offered!
Some tours include a gelato tasting as part of the tour, while most don’t. A few tours provide free bottled water. Some will end the tour at a coffee shop so that you can enjoy a treat or a drink. Some tours have headsets (some mandatory, some optional) to assist in hearing the guides speak. Also, several tours offer photo shoots, which means the guide will take pictures of your group on your tour.
Consider Age Restrictions
If you are a family traveling with younger children, you should read the tour description for any restrictions. The tour restrictions vary quite a bit. Some have no limits, while many disallow children under the age of 2 all the way through age 10.
Please be aware that all young children are required by local law to have a car seat, so your tour operator may need this for your child. We recommend reaching out to your tour operator to find out what will be required and what equipment they provide.

Tips For Taking Rome Golf Cart Tours
I wanted to share some practical tips to help make your group’s Rome golf cart tour as enjoyable as possible.
Have Cash For Tipping Your Guide
One of the most important things we have learned from taking tours is to be sure to have cash available at the time the tour ends to tip your guide. Don’t expect the guide to have the ability to take credit card payments. Therefore, we always like to have Euros available since it’s the local currency. There’s no clear consensus as to how much to tip, and the tipping culture in Europe is very different than in the USA. We recommend tipping around 10% of the total tour price especially if you do a private tour.
What to Bring
Be sure to bring bottled water with you, as most tours don’t provide this. I also recommend sunscreen, as the Rome sun is intense. You may also want to bring a few packaged snacks. Bring a small bag or small backpack to store items.
What Not To Bring
Don’t bring large bags, luggage, or bulky things. Also, if you need to bring things like walkers, folding strollers, wheelchairs, etc., be sure to contact the tour operator beforehand to find out what they will allow. Private tours tend to be more flexible than other tours.
What To Wear
Even though you won’t be walking a lot, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. If you are taking an Appian Way tour with the catacombs included, you’ll be walking as part of the tour. Likewise, dress for the season and the forecast, and remember that summer can be very hot in Rome! Most tours will proceed even in the event of a light rain.
Check The Meeting Point Location
Look at the tour description and map to find out where your tour meeting point is located. These are typically at the tour operator’s physical business location or near a major landmark with a parking lot. Most Rome golf cart tours require you to get to this location on your own unless you choose an option with a pick-up. Plan on being at the meeting point at least 15 minutes early.
Read The Tour Description Carefully
Be sure to read the Rome golf cart tour description on Get Your Guide very carefully. Look at the route and what you’ll see, the amenities, the duration, the meeting point, how many people, and what type of golf cart, etc. A bit of planning and attention to detail can make all the difference in finding the most enjoyable tour for your group.
All Golf Cart Roads Lead To Rome
We absolutely loved visiting Rome! There is perhaps no other city in the world with its rich history. The Roman civilization’s cultural impact on the world makes Rome as popular today as it was 2,000 years ago when people said, “All roads lead to Rome.”
A great way to explore this fascinating era of history is to take one of the Rome golf cart tours. A golf cart tour allows you to see firsthand the glory of the city in a fast, enjoyable, and low-stress way. It’s also the perfect opportunity for families and groups to explore, learn, and make memories together.
