So, I was thinking how to best sum up our little weekend getaway but I think that Longfellow can do it better.
When it was good, it was very good indeed.
But when it was bad it was horrid.
We had every bit of good intentions when we planned this last minute trip down to the Rend Lake area in Southern Illinois. I mean, it was less than two hours away. The forecast looked ok. It was inexpensive and we had a long weekend. What could go wrong?
That is a question that I should have asked myself before we left.
We took our time getting out of the house on Friday. This meant that we were on the road from about 4pm-6pm. And Jake slept the whole way. And then proceeded to terrorize us until well after midnight. Anyone who has a 3 year old knows that it was all downhill from there. He was up at 6am on Saturday. Tired and grumpy for most of the day. He fell asleep in his food at lunch. Got a second wind at dinner. And a prime example of how one tiny pebble can ripple into a tidal wave.
We almost came home early but we toughed it out. There were some great times! We took a couple hikes and enjoyed Fall at it’s finest. We got to eat out a lot. It was laid back. We wore sweatpants and ponytails all weekend. The ‘resort’ did have a bar. And a buffet. With a pasta station. Cue the sweatpants. And we did unplug a bit. The kids had a good time collecting things and chatting with anyone they could find.
Would I do it again? Not this year. There is not enough wine in the world. But give us a few months to get out some growing pains and we will give it another whirl! If anything at least we enjoyed a nice drive and helped stimulate a small town economy here in our own state. And thank goodness we didn’t try anything epic.
Keeping it positive.
Here are some photos that don’t involve kicking, biting or screaming.
Ha ha- I know exactly how that goes! My son’s 3rd birthday is today. He’s beginning to grow out of naps, yet, he still kinda needs them! Our schedule has been thrown off a few times lately- and it’s rough! He’s even started waking up at night again sometimes :o(
