Shell Island, Panama City Beach, Florida
Shell Island is a seven-mile-long barrier island located across from St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach, Florida. It is nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and Saint Andrews Bay and offers bay and gulf activities.
Booking.comBecause it is only accessible via boat, Shell Island continues to top Panama City Beach bucket lists yearly. And I have to let you in on a little secret. It is one of the few places that locals still visit more than tourists. And by locals, I mean anyone within a 2-hour drive. I have a lot of friends from here in Dothan, Alabama, who grew up trolling around in the bay and running around on Shell Island and now make the same memories with their children!
Shell Island is a laid-back place. As I mentioned above, it is a primitive island. That means there are no restrooms or running water. You won’t find picnic pavilions or even trash cans. It’s the time of the place where you bring what you need but take it all back with you. Leave only footprints and take only memories, as they say!
Why do people go to Shell Island if there is nothing there? Because there is nothing there! The magic is that it remains unspoiled in an area where tourists are packed onto beaches, with highrise condominiums and traffic. I often recommend a day trip to Shell Island to my nearby Airbnb guests!

How to Visit Shell Island in Panama City Beach
We have ventured out to Shell Island numerous times and love to explore the pristine beaches, collect seashells, and dip in the crystal-clear Gulf of Mexico waters. There are a few different ways to get there, and we have done them all. I hope that by reading this blog post, you find the best mode of transportation for your family!
Unless you have a friend with a boat, there are three main ways to get to Shell Island. These include renting a boat (typically a pontoon), taking the Shell Island Shuttle or Ferry, or booking a public or private excursion that takes you there.
Let’s look at each of those options! After sharing how to get to Shell Island, I will talk more about what to expect once out there and answer many of your frequently asked questions.
#1 Renting Your Own Pontoon Boat For Shell Island
One of the most popular ways to reach Shell Island is by renting a pontoon boat from a company like Lagoon Pontoons. This option allows you to explore at your own pace and create your own adventure.
Typically, you’ll book a rental that is either half a day or a full day. We almost always do the whole day to avoid needing to rush back. Plus, the cost is typically not much more for almost double the time. It is a lot of time on the water, especially in the hot summer, but you don’t need to stay out for the entire 8+ hours. In fact, we like to head back about an hour before the deadline to avoid the rental boat traffic at the end of the day.
Want to rent a boat to visit Shell Island? Here’s what you need to know:
Choosing the Right Pontoon Rental
Several companies in Panama City Beach offer pontoon boat rentals. Most depart from the Grand Lagoon, and the starting cost is usually around $179+ for a half day for the most basic boat. The options vary from low/high HP boats and base models or deluxe pontoon boats. Some places even offer double-decker pontoon boats with slides!
Pontoon boats are almost always limited to 12 people, which is strictly enforced. Of course, you always want to designate a captain and keep children out from behind the wheel.
When booking your Shell Island pontoon boat, pay attention to where they depart from. Make sure it’s in the Grand Lagoon area. Look for reputable providers that offer well-maintained boats, safety equipment, and clear vessel operation instructions. Remember to ask if they provide a map (most do) and any additional amenities like coolers or snorkeling gear. We have used Lagoon Pontoons and Adventures at Sea in the past as well as Paradise Adventures pontoon rentals. I would recommend both to you!
Navigating to Shell Island
The pontoon boat rental company will explain the area to you. We have always been provided with a large laminated map of the bay and Shell Island with clear directions on where we can and can not go.
It’s worth mentioning that pontoon boats can NOT be taken out in the Gulf. You always boat around in the bay, where you anchor and walk across Shell Island to the Gulf of Mexico side. Experienced boaters have some options to rent other center console boats that may be permitted in the Gulf. You need experience, and it’s not recommended for average boaters.
Once you have your rental boat, head east in the Grand Lagoon towards St. Andrews Bay, just south of St. Andrews State Park. Follow the marked channels and look for navigation buoys. The journey to the western edge takes approximately 10-15 minutes, depending on your starting point.
However, we always keep going and typically go all the way to the end before making our way back. The boat rental company will share some good places to drop anchor. Typically, it’s where you see other boats and where the island is narrow and has paths to walk across.
#2 Shell Island Shuttle or Ferry from St. Andrews State Park
If you prefer a hassle-free way to reach Shell Island, consider taking the Shell Island Shuttle or the St Andrew’s Shell Island Ferry. These options are convenient and perfect for those who want to relax and let someone else handle the transportation.
The one downside is that each of them drops you off in just one place, as opposed to a pontoon rental that allows you to roam. The Shuttle drops you off at the far western edge, which tends to be the busiest. The St Andrews Ferry drops you off approx. 2.2 miles into the Island at the State Park docks. So, you are limited on how much of the island you can actually explore with both.
Visitors can typically stay as long as they want on Shell Island, but you must make sure to be on the last boat back.

#3 Book a Public or Private Excursions to Shell Island
Join a public Shell Island excursion or private tour to see more of the island and additional amenities (such as possible onboard bathrooms).
Companies like Paradise Adventures dolphin tours are excellent options that are the most budget-friendly. These typically are shorter, often around 3 hours, and include a dolphin-watching sail.
Many companies and boat owners also make private trips in the bay and to Shell Island, such as Osprey Charters, which comes highly recommended, or this 3-hour private Shell Island tour for up to 6 people.
Here’s what you can expect when booking a private or group outing to Shell Island.
What’s Included in a Shell Island Tour?
Excursion packages can vary quite a bit! You can find everything from a private guided tour with a marine biologist to a large catamaran outing with inflatable water toys! Typically include transportation to and from Shell Island, a guide, snorkeling equipment, and sometimes other amenities such as kayaks or paddleboards. Check with the excursion company for specific details and any additional costs.
Companies like Paradise Adventures also include the use of their inflatable water park in the bay. They are usually combined with their Shell Island dolphin tours.
Will You Get Guided Island Exploration?
The big catamaran tours often don’t have as much of a “guided” proponent as the private charters do. On the private charters, your knowledgeable guide will often provide fascinating insights into the island’s ecosystem, wildlife, and history. Explore hidden coves, search for seashells, and spot dolphins frolicking in the surrounding waters. Engage in water activities like snorkeling and capture stunning photographs of this natural paradise.
Deciding how to get to Shell Island comes down to what suits you. There is no best answer, and you should consider your budget, boating experience, the makeup of your group, and the time you want to allot to this outing.
What is it Like to Visit Shell Island in Panama City Beach?
I hope I have painted a pretty good picture of Shell Island for you so far. But here, I would like to dive deeper and share photos of both sides of the island. I am often shocked to see people caught off guard when they don’t see the crystal clear emerald waters while trolling around the bay. The bayside and the gulf side are very different, and the western edge is also unique.
Exploring Shell Island
However you choose to get there, you’ll enjoy a scenic boat ride as you make your way to Shell Island. Once there, stroll along the pristine beaches, soak up the sun, snorkel, and swim in the refreshing waters.
The water temperatures are the most desirable between late May and early October. By September, it’s almost like bathwater! However, in the cooler months, you will want a wetsuit. Or, focus on the boat outing without expectations for swimming.
The Bay Side of Shell Island
Located across from the Air Force base, Shell Island, Florida’s bay side, is where most of the people and boats are!
You will encounter brackish water on the island’s St. Andrews Bay shoreline. It’s OK to swim in. The tea-like coloring of the bay comes from the tannins in the local pine forests. It is here that you will encounter the most wildlife when snorkeling. Expect to see starfish, sand dollars, fish, sea urchins, hermit crabs, and more. Leave any sea creatures alone, viewing them with just your eyes.
You will also anchor boats here to walk across to the other side of this undeveloped barrier island. In the summer, particular areas will have numerous boats tied together and almost a party cove-type atmosphere. If you like that, join in. If not, keep going and drop anchor further east on the island.
Sometimes, vendors set up kayaks, paddleboards, and even jet ski rentals. And sometimes, there are ice cream vendors as well. There are many ways to play in the bay!
The Gulf Side of Shell Island
This is where the magic is! Look at this photo of Matt and Abby. Behind them, there is an endless, unspoiled beach. Views like this are why we come!
There are so few places along the Gulf Coast of Florida where you feel like you are on a private island, and this is one of the best. And when you do encounter others, they are typically walking the beach and enjoying the coastline. Since it is primitive, you don’t often see the large camplike beach travel setups, where groups bring everything but the kitchen sink with them!
The West End of Shell Island
This is where the shuttle drops off, and there is space for pontoon boats to anchor. This area gets busy in the peak summer months, with boats and people setting up along the small stretch of coastline.
One of the neat things about this area is the wading pool near the jetties. Here, you can safely snorkel in shallow, clear water—perfect for children!
This area doesn’t truly represent Shell Island, in my opinion. It’s more or less an extension of St. Andrews State Park across the channel. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit this area. You can’t truly experience the magic of Shell Island in just that little area. Remember, the island is 7 miles long!
What Should You Pack For Visiting Shell Island in Panama City Beach
Remember to bring your food, drinks, and beach essentials, as no concessions are available on the island. Bring trash bags and take everything back with you and any other litter you encounter. There are no bathrooms. So, unless your boat has one, you’ll need to plan for this. Many bring buckets and trash bags.
We always bring our snorkeling gear to enjoy the vibrant marine life inhabiting the island’s shallow waters.
One of the most overlooked items is ample sunscreen (we love Sun Bum). The sun is intense, and if you aren’t applying and reapplying your sunscreen throughout the day, you will leave with a sunburn. On that note, portable USB-powered fans are nice to have in the summertime. It’s hot, so packing some liquid IV packets and ice pops is always a good move. And a first aid kit should always be on hand!

Yes, you may keep empty shells. Please do not take any shells that contain living creatures.

Yes, Shell Island is a great place to let your pop run! However, always check with the boat rental company or tour operator to ensure they are allowed. The Shell Island Shuttle does not allow pets.
Are you allowed to camp at Shell Island?
No. Overnight camping is not permitted on Shell Island. However, consider camping at St. Andrews State Park nearby.
How much does it cost to go to Shell Island in Panama City Beach?

How much time should you plan for Shell Island?
You don’t need more than an hour or two on the island, especially in the hot summer months, which is why the Paradise Adventures Snorkel and Dolphin Tour is a good option. But if you can swing a rental pontoon boat, you can easily make a day of this by mixing up the boating and island time! Typically, after a day on the water, we enjoy a casual dinner at the marina before going back for showers and resting for the remainder of the evening.
Can you drive to Shell Island Florida?
No. This primitive barrier island is only accessible by boat.
How far is Shell Island from Rosemary Beach and 30A?
Shell Island is adjacent to St. Andrews State Park on the eastern end of Panama City Beach. You can quickly get to a marina in as little as 5 minutes, depending on where you are staying. Shell Island is also approximately 45 minutes from Rosemary Beach, Florida, and the east end of 30A.

What is the difference between Shell Island and Crab Island?
As discussed here, Shell Island is an actual primitive island. Crab Island is not. It is an underwater sandbar where hundreds, if not thousands, of boats anchor in the same area. It’s quite a contrast and more of an adult-oriented activity. I don’t personally have a photo of Crab Island, but a simple Google image search will show you what it’s like.
Is Shell Island Worth It?
Absolutely! It’s a great way to get out on the water with your family. We enjoy renting a pontoon boat and exploring at our own pace, as well as the occasional snorkel trip and dolphin tour with Paradise Adventures. Shell Island offers a beautiful glimpse back at authentic, unspoiled Florida. It’s one of the treasures of the Gulf Coast, and all of the local bottlenose dolphins seem to agree!
