I have been meaning to share this fun little project with everyone! Over the last month we did our first Insect Lore Butterfly Garden. I say first, because we plan to do this more often!
First, we bought the basic Insect Lore Original Butterfly Garden kit on Amazon. We did the set that came with one voucher for a pack of 5 caterpillars. We ended up ordering another 5 as well. If I had to do it again I may have ordered the Giant Garden or the Butterfly Pavillion just so that we could watch them fly around a little bit more in those days before we released them.
Anyway, so when our caterpillars arrived they were teenie tiny! We watched them over a couple weeks as they grew larger and then begin their metamorphosis as they became chrysalides. The whole family loved monitoring this little project. We moved them into the habitat and waited for them to emerge as adult Painted Lady butterflies. As they came out over a couple of days there was a whole lot of excitement waiting and watching. Abby (so very proudly) even took it to school one day so that her classmates could watch as this was exactly what they were talking about in science class that week!
After a few days watching them inside the habitat we brought them onto the pack deck and opened it up. A couple flew right out and left us quickly and a few lingered for a few minutes. The last few stayed and played with us… landing on noses and the tops of their heads. Abby in particular really enjoyed this! You can see her Facebook live video here along with a clip from the day before. And of course some photos of our experience as well!
I would highly recommend this as a summer project!
