So, I am really working on my photography skills and somewhere along the line while studying I was asked to think about what it is that I am trying to capture in a photograph. ย Is it the clothes, a smiling face, toothless grin or is it a moment? ย Since then I have been pondering this. I have been thinking about the moments and how to best immortalize them.
Before there were cameras things were always documented via the written word. ย Words let you capture something exactly as you want to remember it. ย I am going to make an effort to start documenting the moments for them. ย I have journals for the kids but they get neglected and mainly written in before major life events and on birthdays and holidays. ย I want to remember those sweet moments. ย When Abby and Jake spent hours dressing up and putting on plays. ย Even times like right now where they are sitting at the table TOGETHER circling their favorites from the Target Toy Catalog. ย How Abby put on the same pink dress again today. ย It’s her favorite. Or the day that Jake finally gets across the monkey bars.
I am taking a note from my Father in Law. ย He has a tiny notebook that he keeps in his pocket. ย He calls it his blackberry. ย He makes important notes in it and is always writing things down. ย I am putting a little notebook in my purse. ย Then, next time something really cute happens, I am going to try not to frantically reach for the camera. ย Not going to make them recreate what just happened or get that post-amazing mom moment shot that doesn’t really show anything of significance. ย Not disrupt the memory. ย I am just going to let them carry on and make a little note to myself. ย Something that I can toss into one of their keepsake boxes. ย Hopefully they will come across it one day. ย And smile at seeing my written word and my memories.
And trust me… there will still be more pictures than I imagined possible saved for them too.
