So, I have a confession. I am a die hard festival rat. I love street fairs, concerts in the park, parking lot carnivals, the culture fair, a local Church picnic. Basically, if it’s fun. I’m there. At the start of each summer I make sure to print out a list of all that I can find and we try to hit at least one a weekend. Heck, I remember back before we had kids Matt and I hit not one, not two but THREE small town festivals in one day.
Why do I love them? I feed off of the energy, the people, the music, the smells. I love getting into small communities and supporting their celebrations. I like the rides and games. I love the food. I love seeing the music lineups! Even in the small town there are often ‘past their prime’ musicians that I still love. Seriously, we saw Herman’s Hermits last week at a summer concert at the mall. Seriously Peter Noone was still singing Something Good FIFTY years after it topped the charts. I got my mom a tee shirt! She loved them when she was younger. And next weekend John Michael Montgomery takes the stage in a small town just south of here.
I hope that this is a pastime that I can share with my kids over the next 15 years that they are home with me. Some of my fondest summer memories are at small street fairs.
I encourage you to use your super cyber Internet ninja skills and google fairs and festivals around your area! You would be shocked at how many you will find. (if you are local to Kansas City I always use this one!)
Today we hit up the Old Shawnee Days. The rain held off in the afternoon. We beat the evening crowds and had a great time! Our big decision for tomorrow: the Greek Festival, Downtown Days or heck, maybe even both!
